8—ACTS 2:2-3

Acts 2:2-3 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. (3) And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
2Timothy 1:6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.
2Timothy 1:6 AMP That is why I would remind you to stir up (rekindle the embers of, fan the flame of, and keep burning) the [gracious] gift of God, [the inner fire] that is in you by means of the laying on of my hands [with those of the elders at your ordination].

Greek Pneuma = wind, breath, Spirit. External manifestations of a sound like a powerful wind and tongues of fire demonstrated that God was present and active in a powerful way.

(Ex 3:1-6) Now Moses was keeping the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the back of the wilderness, and came to the mountain of God, unto Horeb. {2} And the angel of Jehovah appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. {3} And Moses said, I will turn aside now, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. {4} And when Jehovah saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. {5} And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground. {6} Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.
1. Horeb was another name for Sinai.
2. The Angel of the LORD = was a Theophany, a revelation of JESUS CHRIST Himself.
3. The bush was burning, but not consumed.
a. explanations that the bush had brilliant leaves or flame colored berries does injustice to the text.
4. The Sovereign GOD of creation is able to act and use His creation as He chooses.
5. He chose to set the bush on fire without burning up the bush.
6. The fire communicated the Holiness and purity of God to Moses.
7. Moses found himself in the presence of the Living God
(Ex 3:13-14 ASV) And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? What shall I say unto them? {14} And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
8. God turned an ordinary bush into a miraculous event to reveal Himself and His will to Moses.

(1Kings 18:38-39 ASV) Then the fire of Jehovah fell, and consumed the burnt offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. {39} And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, Jehovah, he is God; Jehovah, he is God.
1. The LORD miraculously provided fire to consume the sacrifice
(1Chr 21:26 ASV) And David built there an altar unto Jehovah, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings, and called upon Jehovah; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt-offering.
(2Chr 7:1 ASV) Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of Jehovah filled the house.
2. The miracle vindicated Elijah as God's prophet.
3. The miracle proved that Israel's LORD alone was the Living God whom they were to serve.
4. God confirmed He is God with the miracle sign following Elijah's prayer of faith
(Mark 16:20 ASV) And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word by the signs that followed. Amen.
5. The fire consumed the burnt sacrifice, wood, stones, dust and licked up the water in the trench.
6. v39 "The LORD, He is the God; the LORD, He is the God."
7. "I AM THAT I AM" - I swear by Myself
(Ex 3:14 ASV) And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

(Acts 2:3-4 ASV) And there appeared unto them tongues parting asunder, like as of fire; and it sat upon each one of them. {4} And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
(Luke 3:16-17 ASV) John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but there cometh he that is mightier than I, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire: {17} whose fan is in his hand, thoroughly to cleanse his threshing-floor, and to gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.
1. The Hebrews went through the fire – Dan 3:19-30.
2. The earth will be renovated by fire
(2Pet 3:10 ASV) But the day of the Lord will come as a thief; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall be dissolved with fervent heat, and the earth and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
(Rev 20:11-15) And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat upon it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. {12} And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne; and books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of the things which were written in the books, according to their works. {13} And the sea gave up the dead that were in it; and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. {14} And death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death, even the lake of fire. {15} And if any was not found written in the book of life, he was cast into the lake of fire.
3. Your faith will be tried in the fire
(Job 23:10) But he knoweth the way that I take; When he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
(1Pet 1:7 ASV) that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold that perisheth though it is proved by fire, may be found unto praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ:
(Rev 2:10 ASV) Fear not the things which thou art about to suffer: behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee the crown of life.
4. The Fire symbolizes consecrating and separating believers unto God
(Acts 2:3 ASV) And there appeared unto them tongues parting asunder, like as of fire; and it sat upon each one of them.
a. for the work of glorifying Christ –
(John 16:13-14 ASV) Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, these shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come. {14} He shall glorify me: for he shall take of mine, and shall declare it unto you.
b. for the work of witnessing –
(Acts 1:8 ASV) But ye shall receive power, when the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
5. The rushing mighty wind & tongues of fire preceded the Baptism in the Holy Ghost.
6. Stir up the embers of your fire—pour some fuel on the flames
(2Tim 1:6-7) For which cause I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee through the laying on of my hands. {7} For God gave us not a spirit of fearfulness; but of power and love and discipline.
