6—ACTS

THEY CONTINUED IN
PRAYER AND SUPPLICATION
Acts 1:9-14 [v14]; 4:23-32
Acts 1:9-14 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. (10) And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; (11) Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. (12) Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a Sabbath day's journey. (13) And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James. (14) These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

THEY WENT INTO THE UPPER ROOM WITH THREE PURPOSES IN MIND
1. To obey their Master as He "commanded them" – Acts 1:4a.
2. To follow Jesus example in Prayer – John 17.
3. To wait for the Promise of the Father – Acts 1:4b.
4. When God commands us to STAY and WAIT, obedience brings powerful results:
(Acts 2:4 ASV) And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
(Acts 4:31-33 ASV) And when they had prayed, the place was shaken wherein they were gathered together; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spake the word of God with boldness. {32} And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and soul: and not one of them said that aught of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. {33} And with great power gave the apostles their witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.

THE EXPERIENCE OF PENTECOST ALWAYS INVOLVES HUMAN RESPONSIBILITY.
1. We need the Spirit's outpouring for power to do God's work.
2. We should make ourselves available to the Holy Spirit.
3. We have to commit to the will of God – v4; Acts 2:38; 9:11-17; Luke 11:5-13;
(Luke 24:49) And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
(Isa 40:29-31 ASV) He giveth power to the faint; and to him that hath no might he increaseth strength. {30} Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: {31} but they that wait for Jehovah shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint.

NOTICE THE PARALLELS BETWEEN THE HOLY SPIRIT COMING UPON JESUS AND THE HOLY SPIRIT COMING UPON THE DISCIPLES.
1. The Holy Spirit descended upon them after they had prayed
(Luke 3:21-22 ASV) Now it came to pass, when all the people were baptized, that, Jesus also having been baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, {22} and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form, as a dove, upon him, and a voice came out of heaven, Thou art my beloved Son: in thee I am well pleased.
(Acts 1:4 ASV) and, being assembled together with them, he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, said he, ye heard from me.
(Acts 2:1-4 ASV) And when the day of Pentecost was now come, they were all together in one place. {2} And suddenly there came from heaven a sound as of the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. {3} And there appeared unto them tongues parting asunder, like as of fire; and it sat upon each one of them. {4} And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
2. There were observable manifestations of the Holy Spirit
(Luke 3:22 ASV) and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form, as a dove, upon him, and a voice came out of heaven, Thou art my beloved Son: in thee I am well pleased.
(Acts 2:2-4 ASV) And suddenly there came from heaven a sound as of the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. {3} And there appeared unto them tongues parting asunder, like as of fire; and it sat upon each one of them. {4} And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
(Acts 4:31 ASV) And when they had prayed, the place was shaken wherein they were gathered together; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spake the word of God with boldness.
3. The ministries of both Jesus and the disciples began after the Holy Spirit came upon them
cp. Mt. 3:16/4:17; Luke 3:21-23/4L14.19; Acts 2:2-4/2:14-40,48.
4. Continued prayer/–supplication is the key to receiving the power of God with the accompanying anointing of the Holy Spirit – Acts 2:1-4; 4:31
(Acts 1:14 ASV) These all with one accord continued steadfastly in prayer, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.—
(Acts 4:24 ASV) And they, when they heard it, lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, O Lord, thou that didst make the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all that in them is:
5. Peter imprisoned – released through prayer
(Acts 12:5 ASV) Peter therefore was kept in the prison: but prayer was made earnestly of the church unto God for him. (7) And behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shined in the cell: and he smote Peter on the side, and awoke him, saying, Rise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.
6. Barnabas and Saul-called and ordained
(Acts 11:22-26) Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch. (23) Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord. (24) For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord. (25) Then departed Barnabas to Tarsus, for to seek Saul: (26) And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.
7. Paul and Silas praying and singing praises–brought deliverance from prison
(Acts 16:25-26 ASV) But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns unto God, and the prisoners were listening to them; {26} and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison-house were shaken: and immediately all the doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed.
8. Praying with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit brings the anointing
(Eph 6:18 ASV) with all prayer and supplication praying at all seasons in the Spirit, and watching thereunto in all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.
(1Th 5:17 ASV) pray without ceasing;
