Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Luke 24:48 And ye are witnesses of these things.

v8a – Ye Shall Receive POWER – Acts 1:8; 10:44-46

Acts 10:44-46 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. (45) And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. (46) For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
A. PRAISE–Acts 10:44-46
1. One of the clear pictures of believers who have been baptized in the Holy Spirit is an enhanced feel of praise in worship.
a. This is still true, Pentecostal worship services are known for their atmosphere of praise and worship.
b. Even in Acts 2 it mentions that those in the crowd that heard the disciples speaking in tongues heard them "Praising God and telling the wonderful works of God".
c. In fact, the atmosphere was so charged with powerful praise that the crowd thought the disciples drunk with wine!
2. After the day of Pentecost the worship services were powerful and full of praise.
3. Spirit filled Christians are given a power to worship that is enhanced by the Holy Spirit.

  1. This power to worship has a very positive effect on the individual who has been baptized in the Holy Spirit as well as the Church itself.
  2. Studies done on tongue speaking Pentecostals reveal some interesting facts: in a recent study, two social scientists named Malony and Lovekin conducted research on those who had spoken in tongues and found them well-adjusted, happy, and mentally fit people, there have even been several studies that have indicated that they are generally better adjusted individuals than the average person!
  3. It can hardly be said that the early disciples that spoke in tongues were not well adjusted or bold people, in fact quite the opposite appears true.
  4. Paul associates being baptized in the Holy Spirit as a building up of the individual as well as the Church, that it edifies both the believer and the Church.
  5. The experience of being baptized in the Holy Spirit is NEVER alluded to in a negative way in the Bible, always as a positive!
  6. Since this is so, why are so many Christians reluctant to experience God's gift to them?
  7. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is for all believers, not just a select group with a certain personality. The Bible associates only positive benefits with this gift, no negatives.
  8. It enables us or gives us power to WITNESS (reaching out); WALK (reaching in); and to WORSHIP (reaching up).
  9. The Gk word in Acts 1:8 "receive" literally translates as "to take, seize, or grasp"…take hold of this gift, it will empower you for all the right reasons in all the right ways!
    What keeps you from seeking?
v8b - Ye Shall Be WITNESSES.
1. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit –
a. imparts power to preach Jesus as Lord and Savior.
b. and increases the effectiveness of that witness.
c. by strengthening and deepening our relationship with Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
d. this comes from being filled with the Spirit –
(John 14:26 ASV) But the Comforter, even the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you.
(John 15:26-27 ASV) But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall bear witness of me: {27} and ye also bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.
2. The Holy Spirit discloses and makes more real to us the personal presence of Jesus –
(John 14:16-18 ASV) And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may be with you for ever, {17} even the Spirit of truth: whom the world cannot receive; for it beholdeth him not, neither knoweth him: ye know him; for he abideth with you, and shall be in you. {18} I will not leave you desolate: I come unto you.
3. Any witness to an intimate fellowship with Jesus Christ Himself will result in an ever increasing desire by us –
a. to love our Savior.
b. to honor our Savior.
c. to please our Savior.
d. by walking in Holiness and Righteousness.
4. The Holy Spirit witnesses –
a. to righteousness –
(John 16:8 ASV) And he, when he is come, will convict the world in respect of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
b. to truth –
(John 16:13-14 ASV) Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, these shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come. {14} He shall glorify me: for he shall take of mine, and shall declare it unto you.
c. not only with words, but also in life and deeds.
d. thus, we who have received the witness of the Holy Spirit to the redemptive power of Jesus Christ; will necessarily manifest Christ-likeness, love, truth, holiness – 1Cor 13.
5. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is the starting point whereby Spirit-filled believers receive the power to witness for Christ.
a. to bring conviction of SIN, RIGHTEOUSNESS, and JUDGMENT upon the lost –
(John 16:7-9 ASV) Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I go, I will send him unto you. {8} And he, when he is come, will convict the world in respect of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: {9} of sin, because they believe not on me;
b. the effects of such conviction will be evident both in those who sincerely proclaim the Gospel message;
c. and in those who receive the message –
(Acts 2:37-40) Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and the rest of the apostles, Brethren, what shall we do? {38}And Peter said unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. {39} For to you is the promise, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call unto him. {40} And with many other words he testified, and exhorted them, saying, Save yourselves from this crooked generation.
6. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit can be given only to those – whose hearts are turned toward God.
a. and have repented of their wicked ways –
(Acts 2:38 ASV) And Peter said unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
(Acts 3:26) Unto you first God, having raised up his Servant, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from your iniquities.

b. and living a life of holiness –
(Heb 12:14) Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man shall see the Lord:
c. it is maintained by the same commitment to Jesus Christ –
(Acts 5:32 ASV) And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God hath given to them that obey him.
7. The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a Baptism into the Spirit who is holy–"Spirit of Holiness"
(Rom 1:4 ASV) who was declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead; even Jesus Christ our Lord.
a. if the Holy Spirit is truly at work in us in all His fullness we will live in greater conformity to Christ's Holiness.
8. Those who claim the fullness of the Holy Spirit, yet live a life contrary to the Spirit of Holiness are misled and deceived.
9. Those who display inspiring oratory, spiritual gifts, miracles, or spectacular signs, yet lack a life of true faith, love, and righteousness are not operating by the Holy Spirit…but by an unholy spirit, not of God –
(Mat 7:21-23 ASV) Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father who is in heaven. {22} Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy by thy name, and by thy name cast out demons, and by thy name do many mighty works? {23} And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
(Mat 24:24 ASV) For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.
(2Cor 11:13-15 ASV) For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, fashioning themselves into apostles of Christ. {14} And no marvel; for even Satan fashioneth himself into an angel of light. {15} It is no great thing therefore if his ministers also fashion themselves as ministers of righteousness, whose end shall be according to their works.

10. In light of these Scriptural truths, therefore, we who have been baptized in the Holy Spirit will have an intense desire to please Christ in everything we do.
11. The fullness of the Holy Spirit completes His sanctifying work in our lives –
a. we will be separated from the world –
(2Cor 6:17 ASV) Wherefore Come ye out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, And touch no unclean thing; And I will receive you,
b. we will walk in the Spirit –
(Gal 5:16 NAS) But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.
