THREE KINDS OF PEOPLE
1Corinthians 2:14-16 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. (15) But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. (16) For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
THE NATURAL UNREGENERATED MAN —
Jas 3:15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
1. One governed by mere natural instincts —
2Pet 2:12 But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption;
2. A person under the dominion of Satan –
Acts 26:18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.
3. Enslaved to the body and its passions —
Eph 2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
4. Belongs to the world and in sympathy with it —
Jas 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
5. Rejects the righteous ways of the Spirit —
1Cor 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
6. The natural person is not able to understand God or His ways.
7. But instead relies on human reasoning or emotions.
THE CARNAL-FLESH MAN - regenerated man who walks after the flesh.
1. Remains a babe in Christ —
1Cor 3:1 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. 2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.
2. This is a believer with childish ways
a. (which may be interpreted as mature faith)
b. 1Cor 3:1 - cp child like faith.
3. This is an immature Christian who lives more for human opinion than for Christ.
4. If they continue to conform to the world - separation from God is the result — 1Cor 5:5; 2Cor 12:21, 13:5;
1Jn 3:15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
1Jn 5:17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.
5. It is impossible to continue to partake of the things of Satan and the things of God —
Mat 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
1Cor 10:21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.
6. All must separate themselves completely from the world —
2Cor 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? 16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
7. All must purify themselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting Holiness in the fear of the Lord —
2Cor 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
8. Although carnal Christians do not live in persistent disobedience - they are in the process of compromising with the world, the flesh and the devil in some areas–while still trying to remain a part of the people of God–
2Cor 6:14-18; 11:3; 13:5; 1Cor 10:21 Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.
9. The way out of this spiritual morass of Satan is —
Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
THE SPIRITUAL MAN or WOMAN --
1Cor 2:14; 3:1 - identifies the regenerated person - one who has the Holy Spirit and is spiritually minded.
1. Is new born --
John 3:3 ASV Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born anew.
2. He is renewed --
Rom 12:2 ASV And be not fashioned according to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, and ye may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
3. Made a new creation --
2Cor 5:17 ASV Wherefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature: the old things are passed away; behold, they are become new.
4. Receives God's righteousness through faith in Christ – Php 3:9 ASV and be found in him, not having a righteousness of mine own, even that which is of the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith:
5. Possesses spiritual maturity.
6. Indwelt by and walking in the Spirit --
Gal 5:16 ASV But I say, walk by the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
7. In full fellowship with God.
8. Responds to the Truth.
9. Unbelievers find him difficult to understand.
10. Thinks the thoughts of God --
1Cor 2:11-13 ASV For who among men knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of the man, which is in him? even so the things of God none knoweth, save the Spirit of God. 12 But we received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is from God; that we might know the things that were freely given to us of God. 13 Which things also we speak, not in words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Spirit teacheth; combining spiritual things with spiritual words.
11. Lives by the Spirit of God --
Rom 8:4-17 ASV that the ordinance of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 5 For they that are after the flesh mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For the mind of the flesh is death; but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace: 7 because the mind of the flesh is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can it be: 8 and they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But ye are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you. But if any man hath not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwelleth in you, he that raised up Christ Jesus from the dead shall give life also to your mortal bodies through his Spirit that dwelleth in you. 12 So then, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh: 13 for if ye live after the flesh, ye must die; but if by the Spirit ye put to death the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For ye received not the spirit of bondage again unto fear; but ye received the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16 The Spirit himself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are children of God: 17 and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified with him.
