1-BIBLICAL SANCTIFICATION
1Pet. 1:2; Heb 13:12; 1Thes 5:23
1Pet 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.
Heb 13:12 Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.
1Thes 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

SANCTIFICATION - Gk HAGIASMOS =
to make holy, to consecrate, separate from the world and sin and to be set apart unto God.

IN ADDITION TO THE WORD SANCTIFY -- 1Thes 5:23 --
The Bible Standard of Holiness is expressed in such terms as --
1. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind –
Mat 23:37 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not!

2. Blameless and holy –
1Thes 3:13 so that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints.

3. Perfecting Holiness -- 2Cor 7:1 -- this shows a daily walk of Holiness.
2Cor 7:1 Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.

4. Pure and blameless –
Php 1:10 so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ.

5. Set free from sin –
Rom 6:18 and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.

6. Died to sin –
Rom 6:2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?

7. In slavery to righteousness, which leads to Holiness –
Rom 6:19 I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.

8. Obeying Christ's commands –
1Jn 3:22 and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.

9. Overcomes the world –
1Jn 5:4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world--our faith.

THESE TERMS DESCRIBE SANCTIFICATION IN CHRIST
THROUGH THE OPERATION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
--
1. By which He delivers us from sins bondage and power -- Rom 6:1-11.
2. Separates us from sins practices

John 17:15-19 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.

3. Renews our nature according to the image of Christ
2Cor 5:6-7 So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, 7 for we walk by faith, not by sight.
Rom 6:5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.

4. Produces in us the Fruit of the Spirit
Gal 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

5. The Spirit enables us to live victorious lives of dedication to God
Gal 5:16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
Gal 5:25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.

6. Enables us to live holy
Rom 12:1-2 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

THESE TERMS DO NOT IMPLY ABSOLUTE PERFECTION, BUT AN ETHICAL HOLINESS OF
UNBLEMISHED CHARACTER, DEMONSTRATED IN PURITY, OBEDIENCE AND BLAMELESSNESS

Php 2:14-15 Do all things without grumbling or questioning, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.
Col 1:22 He has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him.
1Th 2:10 You are witnesses, and God also, how holy and righteous and blameless was our conduct toward you believers.
Luke 1:6 And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord.

1. By the Grace of God believers are dead to sin and made alive through the Blood of Christ.
2. Believers are set free from sins power and dominion

Rom 6:18 and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.
3. Therefore, they need not and ought not sin.
4. We have an advocate through Jesus Christ.
5. Even though we never reach sinless perfection and freedom from temptation
--
6. Through the Holy Spirit we are able not to sin –
1John 2:1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
1John 3:6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.

SANCTIFICATION IS NOT OPTIONAL FOR BELIEVERS IN CHRIST.
1. The Word teaches
Heb 12:14 Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.

2. We achieve Sanctification by Faith
Act 26:18 to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.'
3. by union with Christ – John 15:4-10; Rom 6:1-11;
1Cor 1:30 He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, whom God made our wisdom and our righteousness and sanctification and redemption.
4. by the Blood of Christ –
1John 1:7-9 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
5. by the Word –
John 17:17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
6. by the regenerating and sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit in our heart – read Jer 31:31-34;
Rom 8:13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
1Cor 6:11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Php 2:12-13 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
2Thes 2:13 But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.
