MINISTRY OF JESUS — COMPASSION
Psa. 145:8-9; 2Cor. 1:3; Eph. 2:4
Psa. 145:8-9 The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy.  9 The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.
2Cor. 1:3 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;
Eph. 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

COMPASSION: IS LOVE IN ACTION
COMPASSION: TO BE FULL OF EAGER YEARNING
COMPASSION: BROUGHT ABOUT BY MERCY

MERCY IS OVER ALL HIS WORKS.
A. Good will toward all men.
B. Jesus came as mercy and comfort.

COMPASSION DIRECTED JESUS' WORK.
A. Because of compassion Jesus called the twelve –
(Mat 9:36) But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.
Mat 10:1) And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.
B. Compassion was a higher priority than anything else – Mt. 14:1-36.

LOOK AT THE COMPASSION OF JESUS.
(Mat 20:30-34) And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David. {31} And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David. {32} And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you? {33} They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened.{34} So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.
(Mark 1:40-41) And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. {41} And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.

A. He saw their faith, not the wrecking of his roof –
(Mark 2:1-5) And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house. {2} And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them. {3} And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four. {4} And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick  of the palsy lay. {5}When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.
B. Compassion drove Him into the tombs place of the insane –
{must read Mk 5:2-19}

COMPASSION PLUS MERCY IS THE PATTERN.
A. Saved because of mercy –
(Eph 2:4) But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us.
(Titus 3:3-5) For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. {4} But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, {5} Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
B. Be ye merciful –
(Lk 6:36) Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
(2Sam 22:36) Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy gentleness hath made me great.
(Luke 6:36) Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
C. The pattern –
(1Tim 1:16) Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.

COMPASSION PLUS MERCY EQUAL POWER.
A. It delivered the mad man –
(Mark 5:19) Howbeit Jesus suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.
B. Mercy brings faithfulness –
(2Cor 4:1) Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;
C. Obtaining mercy.
1. Mercy comes through grace –
(Heb 4:16) Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
2. It's over all His works.
3. We receive it by faith.
3a. No need to ask for it.
3b. It's already in us.
4. We are invited to the throne by His mercy. –
Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
5. There is plenty of it –
(Psa 86:5) For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.
6. Mat. 5:7 Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy.
7. Plant mercy and mercy will grow –
(2Sam 22:26) With the merciful thou wilt show thyself merciful, and with the upright man thou wilt show thyself upright.
7a. With the merciful thou will "show thyself" merciful.
7b. He will show everything He has done!
8. Over all –
(Ps 145:9) The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.

JESUS SET ASIDE MERCY FOR HIMSELF
TO BRING MERCY TO WE WHO WERE LOST –
(2Cor 1:3) Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;
A. Therefore death has no more taste left for us –
(Heb 2:9-18) But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of  death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. {10} For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. {11} For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, {12} Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee. {13} And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me. {14} Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; {15} And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. {16} For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham. {17} Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. {18} For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.
B. No more fear of death! –
(1John 3:16-17) Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. {17} But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?…   (1John 4:15-18) Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. {16} And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. {17} Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the Day of Judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. {18} There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
