6-BEING AN OVERCOMER
HOW TO BE AN OVERCOMER!
1John 5:1-5 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is begotten of God: and whosoever loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. (2) Hereby we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and do his commandments. (3) For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. (4) For whatsoever is begotten of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that hath overcome the world, even our faith. (5) And who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
USE YOUR FAITH TO OVERCOME THE WORLD —
(1John 5:4) For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
THE SPIRITUAL LAW OF FAITH — (Rom 3:27) Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.
A. The Law of FAITH will produce — (Rom 8:29) For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
B. The law of DOUBT will produce — (Rom 6:23) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
- (Job 3:25) For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.
- (James 1:6-8) But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. (7) For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. (8) A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
- (Rom 8:6) For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
- (Rom 14:23) But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin.
WHEN FAITH COMES —
FAITH MOVES MOUNTAINS — Rom. 10:12-17; Gal 3:22-26 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. (23) But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. (24) Wherefore the law was our school-master to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. (25) But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. (26) For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
- Hope — wishful thinking is a Faith Robber!
- Faith is a Satan robber — John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
THE KIND OF FAITH THAT PLEASES GOD COMES TO WHOSOEVER WILL, THROUGH HEARING THE WORD AND ACTING ON THE WORD IN SPITE OF FEELINGS —
(Mark 11:23) "Truly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, 'Be taken up and cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted him.
A. The Measure of Faith. — (Rom 12:3) For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith. FAITH FOR SALVATION!
B. The Gift of God. — (Eph 2:8) For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God.
C. His Workmanship. — (Eph 2:10) For we are His workman-ship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
D. All men have not faith, only the reborn. — (2Thes 3:2) and that we will be rescued from perverse and evil men; for not all have faith.
FAITH GROWS OUT OF THE WORD, NOT BY PRAYING FOR IT.
- Prayer does not cause faith to work; faith causes prayer to work.
- Why pray for something you already have?
FAITH CAN NOT STAND STILL.
A. Faith will never remain when not put to use — will either strengthen or weaken.
TO BE ACCEPTED, WE MUST WALK BY FAITH —
(2Cor 5:9) Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him.
A. Without faith, we cannot please God — (Heb 11:6) And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
B. They that walk in the flesh cannot please God.
C. They are being dominated by the five senses:
TOUCH, TASTE, SMELL, HEAR, and SEE —
(Rom 8:8) and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
TWO KINDS OF FAITH.
A. Sense-knowledge faith — Thomas demands physical evidence to satisfy his senses before he will allow himself to believe —
(John 20:24-29) But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. (25) The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. (26) And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. (27) Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. (28) And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. (29) Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
B. BIBLE BASED WORD FAITH —
(Mat 8:5-13) And when Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, imploring Him, (6) and saying, "Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, fearfully tormented." (7) Jesus said to him, "I will come and heal him." (8)But the centurion said, "Lord, I am not worthy for You to come under my roof, but just say the word, and my servant will be healed. (9) "For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, 'Go!' and he goes, and to another, 'Come!' and he comes, and to my slave, 'Do this!' and he does it." (10) Now when Jesus heard this, He marveled and said to those who were following, "Truly I say to you, I have not found such great faith with anyone in Israel. (11) "I say to you that many will come from east and west, and recline at the table with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven; (12) but the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." (13) And Jesus said to the centurion, "Go; it shall be done for you as you have believed." And the servant was healed that very moment.
C.The centurion depended on the Word alone as evidence.
D. Word faith rises above the five senses.
E. Compare Zacharias (Luke 1:5-25) with Abraham (Rom 4:16-22)
F. We are to walk in Abraham's faith — (Rom 4:3) For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
G. (Rom 4:12) The father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had in uncircumcision.
