17—YOUR TONGUE

Your Tongue + Your Words = Your Future
James 3:2-6 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. (3) Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. (4) Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. (5) Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! (6) And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

WORDS ARE SEEDS THAT START THE PROCESS OF LIFE (Jas 3:2-6 ALT) For we all frequently stumble [fig., sin] [or, stumble [in] many [ways]]; if anyone does not stumble in word [fig., what he says], this one [is] a perfect [or, mature] man, able to bridle [fig., control] also his whole body. (3) Consider the bits [i.e. mouthpieces of bridles] we put into the mouths of the horses for them to be obeying us-and we guide their whole body! (4) Consider also the ships, being so great and being driven by fierce winds, are guided by a very small rudder, wherever the inclination of the helmsman shall be desiring. (5) So also the tongue is a little body part, and [yet it] boasts greatly. Consider how great a forest a little fire sets ablaze! (6) And the tongue [is] a fire, the world of unrighteousness. Thus the tongue is set among our body parts [and is] the [thing] polluting [or, defiling] our whole body and setting on fire the course of our existence-and being set on fire by hell [Gk. gehenna].

TWO THINGS THAT MUST BE UNDERSTOOD BEFORE ANYONE CAN BE A MAN OF FAITH AND POWER:
A. No one has a choice of whether or not he lives by words, but he has the choice of what words he lives by.
B. Righteousness has come upon men of faith.
C. Righteousness speaks — (Rom 10:6) But the righteousness which is of faith saith thus, Say not in thy heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down:)
D. We have been given divine authority to speak God's Words-in His name.

APPLY FAITH (Mark 5:21-42; Deut 30:11-20).
A. Say it — (Mark 11:23 ASV) Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou taken up and cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that what he saith cometh to pass; he shall have it. — (Rom 10:8 ASV) But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach:
B. Do it — (James 1:22 ASV) But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deluding your own selves. — (James 2:17 ASV) Even so faith, if it have not works, is dead in itself. (26) For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead.
C. Receive it — (2Cor 4:18 ASV) while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
D. Tell it — (Rev 12:11 ASV) And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb, and because of the word of their testimony; and they loved not their life even unto death.

JESUS IS HIGH PRIEST OVER OUR CONFESSION.
Priest–one authorized to administer–an agent.
A. Administer–to have charge of as chief agent. To execute or carry into effect.
B. To manage, conduct, furnish, supply, dispense, distribute, direct, control, execute, superintend. To furnish help or be of service.
C. Jesus is priest over seeds, not needs.
D. He meets our needs with our words of faith, not goods.
E. Goods are the results. The prophet could have said, "Cook me a cake or we will die" (1Kings 17:13 ASV) And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said; but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it forth unto me, and afterward make for thee and for thy son.

HOW CAN OUR WORDS CHANGE THINGS?
(ESPECIALLY THE BODY, OUR LIFESTYLE, CIRCUMSTANCES.)

  • Rom 12:2 ALT And [you are] to stop conforming yourselves to this age, but [are] to continue being transformed by the renewal of your mind, in order for you to be proving what [is] the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
  • Mark 11:23 ALT "For positively, I say to you , whoever says to this mountain, 'Be taken up and be cast into the sea' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes [or, has faith] that what he says is going to happen, it will be [granted] to him whatever he says.
1Pet 3:1-2 ALT Likewise, the wives, [continue] being subjected [or, submitted] to your own husbands, so that even if some are refusing to believe the word, through the conduct of their wives they will be won [for Christ] without a word, (2) having observed your pure conduct with respect,
  • Eph 2:3 ALT among whom also we at one time lived in the lusts of our flesh, doing the desires of the flesh and of the thoughts [fig., senses], and we were by nature children of wrath, as also the others.
  • Psa 103:1-3 LITV Of David. Bless Jehovah, O my soul, and all within me, bless His holy name. (2) Bless Jehovah, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits; (3) He who forgives all your iniquities; who heals all your diseases;

A. Put the Word first. Seek first the kingdom — Mat 6:24-33 ALT "No one is able to be serving as a slave to two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other; you are not able to be serving as a slave to God and to worldly wealth. (25) "For this reason I say to you, stop being anxious [about] your life, what you shall eat and what you shall drink, nor [about] your body, what you shall wear. Life is more [than] the nourishment, and the body [more than] the clothing, is it not? (26) "Look attentively at the birds of the air, for they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather into barns, and your heavenly Father provides for them. You are of much more worth than they, are you not? (27) "But which of you, by being anxious, is able to add on his height one cubit? (28) "And why are you anxious about clothing? Be attentively observing the lilies of the field, how they grow. They do not labor, nor do they spin [to make clothing]. (29) "But I say to you, not even Solomon in all his glory was arrayed like one of these. (30) "Now if God clothes in such a manner the grass of the field, being [here] today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, [He will] much more [clothe] you, [O you] of little faith, will He not? (31) "Therefore, do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or, 'What shall we drink?' or, 'What shall we wear?' (32) "For all these [things] the Gentiles seek, for your heavenly Father knows that you have need of all these [things]. (33) "But be seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these [things] will be added to you.
B. Live by love — Forgive — 2Pet 1:3-10 ALT as [fig., seeing that] His divine power has given to us all the [things] pertaining to life and godliness through the full [or, true] knowledge of the One having called us by glory and moral excellence, (4) through which the most precious and great promises have been given to us, so that through these you shall become participants of a divine nature [or, sharers in [the] divine nature], having escaped from the corruption [that is] in [the] world by lust. (5) But also [for] this very [reason], having applied all diligence, provide with your faith moral excellence, and with moral excellence knowledge, (6) and with knowledge self-control, and with self-control patient endurance, and with patient endurance godliness, (7) and with godliness brotherly kindness [fig., affection for fellow-believers], and with brotherly kindness love. (8) For [if] these [qualities] belong to you and [are] abounding [or, increasing], it makes [you] neither useless nor unfruitful in regard to the full [or, true] knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. (9) For [the one] with whom these [qualities] are not present is blind, being shortsighted, having become forgetful of the cleansing [or, purgation] of his former sins. (10) For this reason, rather, brothers [and sisters], be eager [or, diligent] to be making certain His calling and choice [or, election] of you, for these [things] doing, you shall by no means stumble at any time.
C. Decide to live by faith.
D. Change things–not God.
E. Change is made with Words.
F. Calling things that be not as though they were — Rom 4:17 ALT (just as it has been written, "I have appointed you [as] a father of many nations") in the presence of God, whom he believed, the One giving life to the dead [ones] and calling the [things] not existing as existing. [Gen 17:5]
G. The power lies in consistency. — Jas 3:2 ALT For we all frequently stumble [fig., sin] [or, stumble [in] many [ways]]; if anyone does not stumble in word [fig., what he says], this one [is] a perfect [or, mature] man, able to bridle [fig., control] also his whole body.

ACTIONS MAKE OR BREAK CONFESSIONS OF FAITH.

  1. Heb. 3-Consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confessions.
  2. Heb. 4-Hanging on to His High Priest ministry.
  3. Heb. 12-Consider Him who endured.
  4. James 1:22-Be a doer. The Word to a doer is the perfect law of liberty. — Jas 1:22 ALT Now continue becoming doers of [the] word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. — Jas 1:22 LITV But become doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
  5. James 2:17-26-Faith (confession) without action is dead.

BELIEVE GOD IS FOR YOU.
A. Believe God’s love. — 1John 4:16 ALT And we have known [or, have come to know] and have believed [or, have been convinced of] the love which God has in us; God is love [or, is as to His essence love], and the one abiding in that love abides in God, and God {abides} in him.
B. God's Word is His will for you! No one can have strong faith to change things not being sure of God's will.

HOW TO HAVE A GODLY TONGUE — Pro 15:4 LITV A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it is a break of the spirit. — Psa 39:1 LITV I said, I will keep my ways from sinning with my tongue; I will keep my mouth with a muzzle while the wicked are before me.
A. A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth. — Pro 13:2-3 LITV From the fruit of his mouth a man eats good, but the desire of the deceiver is violence. (3) He who guards his mouth keeps his life; he who opens his lips wide is ruined.
B. The tongue of the wise is health. — Pro 12:18 LITV There is a rash speaking like thrusts of a sword, but the tongue of the wise is healing.
C. Put away from thee a disobedient mouth. — Pro 4:24 LITV Turn away from you the crooked mouth, and put perverse lips far from you.
D. Psa 141:3 Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.
Luke 6:45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good; and an evil man of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
Matthew 12:36-37 Every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
Romans 10:8 The Word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the Word of faith, which we preach.
James 1:26 If any among you seem to be religious, and bridles tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is in vain. Jas 3:2-17.
E. Spirit of faith. — 2Cor 4:13 ALT But having the same spirit of faith, according to the [word] having been written, "I believed, therefore, I spoke," we also believe, and so we speak. Psa 116:10 LITV I believed; so I speak; I was greatly afflicted;
Luke 17:6 If ye had faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye might say this sycamine tree, Be thou plucked up by the root, and be thou pl in the sea; and it should obey you.
Psalm 89:34 My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.
Proverbs 15:4 A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.
Philemon 6 The communication of faith may become effectual (active, energetic, at work) by acting on the knowledge of every good thing which is in you.
Malachi 3:13 Your words have been stout against me, saith the Lord.
