13-THE WORD—BE SINGLE-MINDED
James 1:1-8 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting. (2) My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; (3) Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. (4) But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. (5) If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. (6) But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. (7) For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. (8) A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
THE SINGLE MIND IS CONTROLLED AND RULED BY THE WORD. —
Luke 21:12 (ASV) But before all these things, they shall lay their hands on you, and shall persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, bringing you before kings and governors for my name's sake. 13 It shall turn out unto you for a testimony. 14 Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate beforehand how to answer: 15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to withstand or to gainsay. 16 But ye shall be delivered up even by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolk, and friends; and [some] of you shall they cause to be put to death. 17 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake. 18 And not a hair of your head shall perish. 19 In your patience ye shall win your souls.
Rom 5:1 (ASV) Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ; 2 through whom also we have had our access by faith into this grace wherein we stand; and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only so, but we also rejoice in our tribulations: knowing that tribulation worketh stedfastness; 4 and stedfastness, approvedness; and approvedness, hope: 5 and hope putteth not to shame; because the love of God hath been shed abroad in our hearts through the Holy Spirit which was given unto us.
MAN OF TWO MINDS (James 1:8).
A. A house divided against itself will fall. — Luke 11:17 (ASV) But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house [divided] against a house falleth.
B. Without receiving from God, failure is inevitable.
THE DOUBLE MIND TRIES TO LIVE ON FAITH AND FEAR AT THE SAME TIME.
A. The double mind: I'll serve God as I can; but I do have to make a Living.
B. The Word-ruled mind: I'll do whatever God says to do and He'll meet my needs.
C. One thing is needful - the Word! — Luke 10:38 (ASV) Now as they went on their way, he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at the Lord's feet, and heard his word. 40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving; and she came up to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister did leave me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. 41 But the Lord answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art anxious and troubled about many things: 42 but one thing is needful: for Mary hath chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
D.THE WORD-RULED MIND NEVER PREPARES FOR FAILURE OR LOSS.
A. James 1:17 God is single-minded. — James 1:17 ESV Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
B. James 1:8 in The Amplified Bible perfectly describes the man with the double mind. — James 1:8 AMP [For being as he is] a man of two minds (hesitating, dubious, irresolute), [he is] unstable and unreliable and uncertain about everything [he thinks, feels, decides].
BE A DOER OF THE WORD. — James 1:22-25 ALT Now continue becoming doers of [the] word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. (23) Because if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, this one has been likened to a man observing his natural face in a mirror, (24) for he observed himself and has gone away, and immediately he forgot what kind of [person] he was. (25) But the one having looked into [the] perfect law, the [law] of liberty, and having continued [in it], this one-not having become a forgetful hearer but a doer of work-this one will be happy in his doing.
- Continue in the perfect law of liberty.
- To the believer who acts on the Word, the Word becomes a perfect law!
- It works every time to produce liberty! — (John 8:31-32 ALT) So Jesus was saying to the Jews having believed [or, trusted] in Him, "If you remain in My word, truly you are My disciples. (32) "And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free!"
