13-Prophecy—Day of the Lord—Part 6

THE DAY OF THE Lord (Yahweh) Part 6
Joel 1:15‑20; 2Sam. 22:7‑16; Isa. 2:10‑21; Jer. 25:29‑33; Mat. 24 & 25

THE SIXTH EVENT WILL BE THE DIFFERENCE IN THE LIFE OF THE BELIEVER THAT THESE TRUTHS SHOULD MAKE.

  1. God did not inform us of these events to fill our notebooks, keep us off the streets, or provide a greater pool of potential questions for trivia games; God did it to change our lives.
  2. And He tells us in several passages just what those changes should be.

THE FINAL JUDGEMENT

  1. Final battle of God and Magog — Rev 20:7-9.
  2. All the wicked will be raised from the dead to face judgment — Isa 26:19-21; Dan 12:2; John 5:28-29; Rev 20:12-15.
  3. The great white throne judgment — Rev 20:11-15.
  4. All of God's enemies will be cast into the Lake of Fire — 2Thes 2:9; Rev 20:10:12-15; 21:8.

The satanic revolt and its judgment…

  1. Satanic Rebellion Crushed — (Rev 20:7‑10) And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, {8} And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. {9} And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. {10} And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
  2. Rev 20:7: The release of Satan enables that evil spirit to mount one final offensive against the Lord of life. Gog and Magog, mentioned in Ezk. 38, indicate a confederation, which, though vast and powerful, is still no equal to God. Fire from heaven ends the rebellion, and Satan follows the beast and false prophet into hell.

The resurrection and final judgment of the wicked—

  1. The Great White Throne Judgment — (Rev 20:11‑15) And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. {12} And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. {13} And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. {14} And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. {15} And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
  2. Rev 20:11: (vv. 11‑15) Final judgment for unbelievers occurs at the Great White Throne. "Books" (plural form) refers to the cataloging of the thought‑and action‑life of all men. "Book" (singular) is a reference to the Lamb's Book of Life in which the names of all the redeemed are recorded. The event is for the purpose of demonstrating the perfect justice of God in His judgments. This is accomplished by revealing to men the essential sinfulness of their acts and thoughts and by further reminding them of their tragic failure to respond properly to the atoning grace of Christ. The consequence of these failures is that unbelievers join Satan, the beast, and the false prophet in hell, i.e., the Lake of Fire.

The destruction of the present earth and the atmospheric and planetary heavens in preparation of the future Day of God —

  1. The Day of the Lord — (2Pet 3:10‑12) But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. {11} Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, {12} Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
  2. 2Pet 3:10: This, in opposition to the scoffers and false teachers, stresses the certainty of the day of the Lord.
  3. The expression, "the day of the Lord," encompasses all the events pertaining to the return and reign of the Lord.
  4. The last days, or the messianic age (Heb. 1:2; James 5:3; 1Pet. 1:20), were inaugurated by the incarnation of Jesus.
  5. The climax of the age shall come with the destruction of the old order. This section is the only place where Scripture teaches the destruction of the world by fire.
  6. After the destruction by fervent fire of the present sin‑plagued order, God will create a new heaven and new earth, in which righteousness will be the norm (cp. Rev. 21; 22).
  7. The whole picture of the day of the Lord is cosmic.
