THE DAY OF THE LORD — (Zech 14:1‑9) Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. {2} For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. {3} Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. {4} And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. {5} And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee. {6} And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark: {7} But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light. {8} And it shall be in that day, that living waters shall go out from Jerusalem; half of them toward the former sea, and half of them toward the hinder sea: in summer and in winter shall it be. {9} And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.

  1. Zech 14:1: (vv. 1-2) The eschatological victory and enthronement of the Lord as King is described in this final chapter. Final victory begins with apparent defeat (cp. Rev. 11:3‑10). This universal antagonism against Jerusalem is the continuation of events described in Zech 12:2-3. (Note also in context Isa. 13; Joel 2:1; Mal. 4:1; Rev. 18.)
  2. Zech 14:3: Rev. 16:13‑16 describes how all these nations are motivated to unite against Jerusalem. This is the Battle of Armageddon.
  3. Zech 14:4: Conceivably this could be the Valley of Jehoshaphat (cp. 6:1; Joel 3:12). Certainly this is the personal, visible, and final return of the Lord‑Messiah Jesus. The site of His agony and betrayal (Luke 22:39) will be the site of His glorious manifestation (cp. Acts 1:9‑12; Rev. 19:11‑16).
  4. Zech 14:5: The initial purpose of the valley is for the Jews to escape the final onslaught.
  5. "Azal" cannot be definitely located, but is somewhere east of Jerusalem. The "saints" may include both redeemed humanity and angels (Mat. 25:31; 1Thes. 3:13; Rev. 19:14).
  6. Zech 14:6: (vv. 6‑8) Drastic changes in nature will occur in that
  7. day (Isa. 13:9-10; 24:19‑23; Joel 3:14‑19; Mat. 24:29-30; Rev. 6:12‑14). The Dead Sea is the "eastern" sea, and the "western" is the Mediterranean Sea.
  8. Zech 14:9: No longer shall there be many world religions or many names for a god (cp. Deut. 6:4). The prayer of Mat. 6:9-10 which is partially fulfilled now, will finally be answered.

the Judgment of Israel —

  1. (Ezk 20:34‑38) And I will bring you out from the people, and will gather you out of the countries wherein ye are scattered, with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out. {35} And I will bring you into the wilderness of the people, and there will I plead with you face to face. {36} Like as I pleaded with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so will I plead with you, saith the Lord GOD. {37} And I will cause you to pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant: {38} And I will purge out from among you the rebels, and them that transgress against me: I will bring them forth out of the country where they sojourn, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
  2. Ezk 20:37: As the animals were passed under a rod, every tenth animal was separated as a tithe (Lev. 27:32). The Hebrews are to be judged by God, who will save the righteous and judge the wicked.
