ECLECTIC—JESUS FULFILLS THE LAW

JESUS FULFILLS THE LAW
Matthew 5:17-18 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.  (18) For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

5:17 THE LAW ... TO FULFILL. It is Christ's intention that the spiritual requirement of God's law be fulfilled in the lives of His followers — Rom. 3:31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law. — Rom. 8:1-4 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. (2) For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. (3) For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: (4) That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

THE BELIEVER'S RELATION TO THE LAW OF GOD INVOLVES THE FOLLOWING:
(1) The law that the believer is obliged to keep consists of —

a. the ethical and moral principles of the 0.T. —
Mat. 7:12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
Mat. 22:36-40 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? (37) Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. (38) This is the first and great commandment. (39) And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. (40) On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Rom. 3:31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.
Gal. 5:14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

b. as well as the teachings of Christ and the apostles —
Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
1Cor. 7:19 Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of God.
1Cor. 9:21 To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.
Gal. 6:2 Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

c. These laws reveal the nature and will of God for all people and still apply today. 0.T. laws which applied directly to the nation of Israel, such as the sacrificial, ceremonial, social, or civil laws, are not binding on the Christian —
Heb. 10:1-4 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. (2) For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. (3) But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. (4) For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
Lev. 1:2-3 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man of you bring an offering unto the LORD, ye shall bring your offering of the cattle, even of the herd, and of the flock. (3) If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD.
Lev. 24:10 And the son of an Israelitish woman, whose father was an Egyptian, went out among the children of Israel: and this son of the Israelitish woman and a man of Israel strove together in the camp;

(2) The believer must not view the law as a system of legal commandments by which to obtain merit for forgiveness and salvation —
Galatians 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
Galatians 2:19 For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.

(3) Rather, the law must be seen as a moral code for those who are already in a saved relationship with God and who, by obeying it, express the life of Christ within themselves —
Rom. 6:15-22 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. (16) Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? (17) But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. (18) Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. (19) I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. (20) For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. (21) What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. (22) But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

(4) Faith in Christ is the point of departure for the fulfilling of the law. Through faith in Him, God becomes our Father
John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

(5) Hence, our obedience as believers is done not only out of a relationship to God as sovereign Law-giver, but also out of a relationship of children to their Father
Gal. 4:6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

(6) Through faith in Christ, believers, by the grace of God —
Rom. 5:21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

(7) and the indwelling Holy Spirit —
Galatians 3:5 He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
Galatians 3:14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Romans 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

(8) are given an inner compulsion and power to fulfill God's law —
Romans 16:25-26 Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, (26) But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:
Hebrews 10:16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;

(9) We fulfill it by walking after the Spirit  (Rom. 8:4-14). The Spirit helps us put to death the sinful deeds of the body and to fulfill the will of God —
Rom. 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

a. Thus, external conformity to God's law must be accompanied by the inner transformation of our hearts and spirits (cp. Mat. 7:21-28 below).

(10) Having been freed from the power of sin and now enslaved to God —
Rom. 6:18-22 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. (21) What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

a. believers follow the principle of "faith" by being "under the law to Christ"
1Cor. 9:21 To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.

(11) In so doing we fulfill "the law of Christ"
Gal. 6:2 Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

a. and are thus faithful in ourselves to the requirement of the law — Gal. 5:16-25;
Romans 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Galatians 2:19 For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.
Galatians 3:19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

(12) Jesus emphatically taught that doing the will of His heavenly Father is an Ongoing condition of entering the kingdom of heaven —
Matthew 7:21-28 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. (22) Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? (23) And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. (24) Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: (25) And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. (26) And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: (27) And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it. (28) And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:
