28—ACTS 11:19-24

PURPOSE IN YOUR HEART
Acts 11:22‑23 (11:19‑24)
Acts 11:19-24 They therefore that were scattered abroad upon the tribulation that arose about Stephen travelled as far as Phoenicia, and Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to none save only to Jews. (20) But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they were come to Antioch, spake unto the Greeks also, preaching the Lord Jesus. (21) And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number that believed turned unto the Lord. (22) And the report concerning them came to the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas as far as Antioch: (23) who, when he was come, and had seen the grace of God, was glad; and he exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord: (24) for he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord.

NOTHING IN LIFE CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED WITHOUT A VISION AND A PURPOSE.

1. Proverbs 29:18 ASV Where there is no vision, the people cast off restraint; But he that keepeth the law, happy is he.
(Pro 29:18 AMP) Where there is no vision [no redemptive revelation of God], the people perish; but he who keeps the law [of God, which includes that of man]--blessed (happy, fortunate, and enviable) is he. [1Sam. 3:1; Amos 8:11-12.]

vision, prophetic revelation. A message from God given through a prophet; a prophetic vision (see 1Sam 3:1; Isa 1:1; Amos 8:11‑12).
perish. Lit., are let loose, are unrestrained. Without prophetic revelation from God, people are unrestrained and fall under judgment. For an example of this, — Exodus 32:6 And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt-offerings, and brought peace-offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.
people cast off restraint. Possibly an allusion to the sinful actions of the Israelites while Moses was on Mount Sinai.Exodus 32:25 And when Moses saw that the people were broken loose (for Aaron had let them loose for a derision among their enemies),

DETERMINE TO FORSAKE …

1. The world — (Heb 11:27) By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.
He forsook Egypt. Either when he fled to Midian at age 40 (Ex. 2:11‑15) or When he left at the time of the Exodus (Ex. 12:37).

2. The way of the flesh (2Tim 2:22) Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
lusts. Not only for immoral but also foolish things.
Temptation is to be avoided ––
by fleeing that which hinders,
by following that which helps, and
by seeking the company of spiritual people of faith in Christ.

3. The selfish will — (Mat 10:38) And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.

cross. This reference to a cross — needed no explanation, for the Jews had seen thousands of their countrymen crucified by the Romans. Allegiance even to death is demanded of Christ's followers.

DETERMINE TO FOLLOW …

1. Righteousness — Mat. 5:6 ASV Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.  Mat. 5:6 AMP Blessed and fortunate and happy and spiritually prosperous (in that state in which the born-again child of God enjoys His favor and salvation) are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness (uprightness and right standing with God), for they shall be completely satisfied! [Isa. 55:1-2.]

2. Faith — (Eph 6:16) Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

The large (2½x4 ft) Roman shield, covered with leather, could extinguish flaming arrows. The shield consists of faith.

3. Love — (Jude 1:21) Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

4. Peace — (Rom 4:19) And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb. ––

Abraham fully faced the difficulty, yet he believed God.

DETERMINE TO FIND …

1. God's grace to help — (Heb 4:16) Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
1a. His grace comes when we come in our time of need, and not until.

2. God's perfect will — (Rom 12:1) I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

brethren. This appeal for dedication of life is addressed to believers (as 1Cor. 6:20; Jas 4:7)
1Corinthians 6:20 for ye were bought with a price: glorify God therefore in your body.
James 4:7 Be subject therefore unto God; but resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
by the mercies of God, which has been described in the preceding chapters,
present. A decisive decision as in Rom. 6:13. Romans 6:13 neither present your members unto sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves unto God, as alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
living sacrifice in contrast to dead animal sacrifices.
Reasonable service. Intelligent, rational & deliberate.

(Rom 12:2) And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

be not conformed. i.e., do not live according to the style or manner of this present age.
be ye transformed. A continual process of change from inside out. The word is used of Christ's transfiguration (Mat. 17:2; 2Cor. 3:18).
Matthew 17:2 and he was transfigured before them; and his face did shine as the sun, and his garments became white as the light.
2Corinthians 3:18 But we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord the Spirit.
Renewing of your mind. The center for this change (cp Eph. 4:23; 2Cor. 10:5).
2Corinthians 10:5 casting down imaginations, and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ;
Ephesians 4:23 and that ye be renewed in the spirit of your mind,
prove. Ascertain. Dedication gives the ability to discern God's will.

3. God's gift of faith — (Eph 2:8) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Salvation is by grace…through faith.
a. Faith involves knowledge of the gospel — (Rom 10:14-17 ASV) How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? {15} and how shall they preach, except they be sent? even as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that bring glad tidings of good things! {16} But they did not all hearken to the glad tidings. For Isaiah saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? {17} So faith {believing} cometh of hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
b. Acknowledgment of the truth of its message.
c. Personal reception of the Savior — (John 1:12) But as many as received him, to them gave he the right to become children of God, even to them that believe on his name.
d. Works cannot save (Eph 2:9), but good works always accompany salvation (v. 10; James 2:17).
(Eph 2:9) Not of works, lest any man should boast.
(Heb 11:6) But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
(James 2:17) Even so faith, if it have not works, is dead in itself.
To please God, one must believe that the true God (not a god) exists and that He rewards.

4. God's gift of life — (Mat 10:39) He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

5. Paul — (Phil 3:14) I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
