27—ACTS 11:15-18

THE HOLY GHOST FELL ON THEM
Acts 11:15-18 And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, even as on us at the beginning. (16) And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit. (17) If then God gave unto them the like gift as he did also unto us, when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I, that I could withstand God? (18) And when they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then to the Gentiles also hath God granted repentance unto life.

v15 ‑ THE OUTPOURING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT ON PENTECOST SET A PATTERN FOR RECEPTION OF THE SPIRIT THEREAFTER — (Acts 2:4 ASV) And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
1. THE BAPTISM IN THE SPIRIT WOULD BE DETERMINED –
A. by the visible transformation of the individual.

B. the infusion of joy — (Isa 12:3 ASV) Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.
12:3 wells. Perhaps an allusion to God's abundant provision of water for Israel during the desert wanderings (cp. Ex 15:25,27).
But here God's future saving act is itself the "well" from which Israel will draw life‑giving water (Ps 36:9; Jer 2:13; John 4:10).
(John 7:37) Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink.
7:37 the last…day of the Feast. Either the seventh or the eighth day: This feast lasted seven days (Lev 23:34; Dt 16:13,15) but had a "closing assembly" on the eighth day (Lev 23:36).
stood and said in a loud voice. Teachers usually sat, so Jesus drew special attention to his message.
(John 7:38 ASV) He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, from within him shall flow rivers of living water.
7:38 living water. (John 4:10-14) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”
4:10 gift. The Greek for this word is used only here in this Gospel and emphasizes God's grace through Christ. Jesus gave life and gave it freely.
living water. In 7:38‑39 the term is explained as meaning the Holy Spirit, but here it refers to eternal life (see v.14).
(John 4:11) “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?”
4:11 deep. Christian pilgrim sources as early as the fourth century mention a well in this area that was about 100 feet deep. When the present well was cleaned out in 1935, it was found to be 138 feet deep.
(John 4:12) “Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?”
4:12 our father Jacob. Respect for the past prevented her from seeing the great opportunity of the present.
(John 4:13)
Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, (14) but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (NIV)
4:14 welling up. The expression is a vigorous one, with a meaning like "leaping up." Jesus was speaking of vigorous, abundant life (cp. 10:10).
(John 7:39 ASV) But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believed on him were to receive: for the Spirit was not yet given; because Jesus was not yet glorified.
7:39 the Spirit. Explaining the "living water" (v. 38).
had not been given. In the manner in which he would be given at Pentecost (see Acts 2).
glorified. Here refers to Jesus' crucifixion, resurrection and exaltation (see John 13:31). The fullness of the Spirit's work depends on Jesus' prior work of salvation.

C. With Spirit inspired utterances – Acts 2.4.

D. And boldness to witness – Acts 4:31, 8:15‑19, 10:45‑46, Acts 19:6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. (NIV)

2. PETER POINTED OUT TO THE APOSTLES AND BRETHREN IN JERUSALEM THAT CORNELIUS' HOUSEHOLD HAD SPOKEN IN TONGUES WHEN THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS POURED OUT ON THEM —
(Acts 10:45‑46) The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles.
10:45 astonished…even on the Gentiles. Apparently the early Jewish Christians failed to understand that the gospel was for the Gentiles as well as for the Jews, and that they would share alike in the benefits of redemption. Gentile proselytes to Judaism, however, were accepted (see 6:5).
[Acts 10:46] For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.

3. THEY WERE CONVINCED THAT GOD WAS GRANTING SALVATION IN CHRIST TO THE GENTILES ~ v18.

4. THE BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT SHOULD NOT BE ASSUMED IF SUCH TANGIBLE, AUDIBLE MANIFESTATIONS AS SPEAKING IN TONGUES ARE ABSENT.

5. NOWHERE IN ACTS IS THE BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT CONSIDERED AN EXPERIENCE TO BE KNOWN BY FAITH PERCEPTION ALONE Acts 8:12,16 But when they believed Philip as he preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. [16] because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. (NIV)
8:16 not yet come upon any of them. Since the day of Pentecost (John 20:22), those who "belong to Christ" (Rom 8:9) also have the Holy Spirit. But the Spirit had not yet been made manifest to the Christians in Samaria by the usual signs.
This deficiency was now graciously supplied (v.17).
Acts 19:6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. (NIV)
19:6 placed his hands on them. Holy Spirit came on them… spoke in tongues and prophesied. The same experience the disciples had at Pentecost (2:4,11) and the Gentiles had in Caesarea (10:46).

v16‑17 ‑ US WHO BELIEVED ‑ describes an action occurring before the main verb God GAVE.
1. A MORE EXACT TRANSLATION WOULD BE "God gave to them the like Gift as He did unto us also after believing."

2. THIS AGREES WITH HISTORICAL FACTS THAT THE FIRST DISCIPLES HAD BELIEVED IN JESUS AND WERE REGENERATED BY THE SPIRIT BEFORE THE DAY OF PENTECOST.

3. YOU HAVE TO BE CLEANED UP ‑ BEFORE YOU CAN BE FILLED UP — (Zech 3:3-5 ASV) Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and was standing before the angel. {4} And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take the filthy garments from off him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with rich apparel. {5} And I said, Let them set a clean mitre upon his head. So they set a clean mitre upon his head, and clothed him with garments; and the angel of Jehovah was standing by.
3:4 those who were standing before him. Probably angels
(see also v.7). Take off his filthy clothes. Thus depriving him of his priestly office. The act is here symbolic also of the removal of sin (see v. 9).
3:5 Put a clean turban on his head. Thus reinstating him into his high‑priestly function so that Israel once again has a divinely authorized priestly mediator. On the front of the turban were the words: "HOLY TO THE LORD" (Ex 28:36; 39:30; cp. 14:20).

v18 ‑ WHEN THEY HEARD THESE THINGS.
1. PETER'S SPEECH SILENCED ALL OBJECTIONS – v4‑18.

2. GOD HAD BAPTIZED THE GENTILES WITH THE HOLY GHOST — Acts 10:45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. (NIV)

3. ACCOMPANYING THIS WAS THE CONVINCING EVIDENCE THAT THEY HAD SPOKEN IN OTHER TONGUES — Acts 10:46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. (NIV)

4. THIS WAS THE ONLY SIGN THAT WAS NEEDED.

5. AND IT WAS ACCEPTED WITHOUT DOUBT — Acts 2:4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. (NIV)
