22—ACTS 9:1-9

THE CONVERSION OF PAUL
Acts 9:1-9 (v1-19)
Acts 9:1-9  And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,  (2)  And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.  (3)  And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:  (4)  And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?  (5)  And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.  (6)  And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.  (7)  And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man.  (8)  And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus.  (9)  And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink.

Vvs. 3-9 RECORD THE CONVERSION OF PAUL OUTSIDE THE CITY OF DAMASCUS — cp 22:3-16; 26:9-18.

THAT HIS CONVERSION OCCURS HERE RATHER THAN LATER AT THE HOUSE OF JUDAS [v11] IS CLEAR FROM THE FOLLOWING:

1.  v5 - "Who art Thou Lord?" — (1Cor 12:3) Wherefore I make known unto you, that no man speaking in the Spirit of God saith, Jesus is anathema; and no man can say, Jesus is Lord, but in the Holy Spirit.

2.  Paul is obedient to Christ — (Acts 22:10) And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do. — (Acts 26:15-19) And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest. {16} But arise, and stand upon thy feet: for to this end have I appeared unto thee, to appoint thee a minister and a witness both of the things wherein thou hast seen me, and of the things wherein I will appear unto thee; {17} delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom I send thee,{18}to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive remission of sins and an inheritance among them that are sanctified by faith in me. {19} Wherefore, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision:

3.  Paul commits himself to be a "minister and a witness" of the Gospel — (Acts 26:16) But arise, and stand upon thy feet: for to this end have I appeared unto thee, to appoint thee a minister and a witness both of the things wherein thou hast seen me, and of the things wherein I will appear unto thee.

4.  Paul commits himself as a missionary to the Gentiles — (Acts 26:17-18 ASV) delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom I send thee, {18} to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive remission of sins and an inheritance among them that are sanctified by faith in me.

5.  Paul gives himself to prayer.

6.  Paul is called "brother Saul" by Ananias – v17. Salvation is never imparted by laying on of hands.

  1. (Mark 16:18) they shall take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall in no wise hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
  2. (Acts 19:2-6) and he said unto them, Did ye receive the Holy Spirit when ye believed? And they said unto him, Nay, we did not so much as hear whether the Holy Spirit was given. {3} And he said, Into what then were ye baptized? And they said, Into John's baptism. {4} And Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him that should come after him, that is, on Jesus. {5} And when they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. {6} And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

7.  Ananias assumes Paul is a believer who has experienced the New Birth — (John 3:3-5) Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God. {4} Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter a second time into his mother's womb, and be born? {5} Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God! — (Titus 3:5) not by works done in righteousness, which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy he saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit.

8.  And is committed to Christ and God's mission.

9.  And needs only to be baptized in water, have his sight restored and to be filled with the Spirit – v17-18.

  1. Three days after Paul's conversion he is filled with the Holy Spirit.
  2. Paul's experience parallels that of the disciples at Pentecost –
    1. first, he experienced the New Birth and is saved – v5-6.
    2. then he is "filled with the Holy Spirit" – v17-18.
    3. The New Testament shows that one FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT BEGINS TO SPEAK WITH TONGUES — (Acts 2:4) And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. — (Acts 10:45-46) And they of the circumcision that believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit. {46} For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. — (Acts 11:15) And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, even as on us at the beginning. — (Acts 19:6) And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
    4. Paul testified that he frequently spoke in tongues: — (1Cor 14:18) I thank God, I speak with tongues more than you all:
    5. v17-18 - Paul received his healing, filled with the Holy Spirit and was baptized in water.
    6. This miraculous conversion of Paul is a testimony to God's Grace.
    7. This same Grace is extended to all — (Titus 2:11) For the grace of God hath appeared, bringing salvation to all men. — (Eph 2:8) for by grace have ye been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, (it is) the gift of God;
