21—ACTS 8:18-25

THY HEART IS NOT RIGHT
Acts 8:18-25 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money, (19) Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. (20) But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. (21) Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. (22) Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. (23) For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity. (24) Then answered Simon, and said, Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me. (25) And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans.

v18 - WHEN SIMON SAW…The Holy Spirit falling upon the Samaritans was accompanied by observable external manifestations apparent even to Simon the sorcerer.

It is reasonable to conclude the manifestations were similar to those at Pentecost, i.e., speaking with other tongues

  • (Acts 2:4 ASV) And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
  • (Acts 10:45-46 ASV) And they of the circumcision that believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit. {46} For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.
  • (Acts 11:15 ASV) And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, even as on us at the beginning.
  • (Acts 19:6 ASV) And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

This manifestation of Speaking with tongues gave the Samaritans and apostles a verifiable sign that the Holy Spirit had fallen upon the new believers.

v21 - THY HEART IS NOT RIGHT…the Baptism in the Holy Spirit in the book of Acts occurs only in the context of committed discipleship to Jesus Christ.

  1. SIMON…sought the power and gift of the Holy Spirit.
  2. as well as the authority to impart the gift -- v19.
  3. was rejected by God because He was still wicked - IN THE BOND OF INIQUITY -- v22-23.
  4. and was not right in his heart toward God.
    The gift of the Holy Spirit will be poured out only on those that are obedient, fears Him and lives righteously —
    1. (Acts 5:32 ASV) And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God hath given to them that obey him.
    2. (Acts 10:35 ASV) but in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is acceptable to him.
    3. (Acts 10:44-48 ASV) While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all them that heard the word. {45} And they of the circumcision that believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit. {46} For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, {47} Can any man forbid the water, that these should not be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit as well as we? {48}And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

Before and after the day of Pentecost - the followers of Christ … were devoted to the risen Lord – 1:2-14; Acts 2:32 This Jesus did God raise up, whereof we all are witnesses.

  1. engaged in continual prayer – 1:14;
    Acts 6:4 (ASV) But we will continue steadfastly in prayer, and in the ministry of the word.
  2. lived lives separated from sin and the world —
    (Acts 2:38-40 ASV) And Peter said unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. {39} For to you is the promise, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call unto him. {40} And with many other words he testified, and exhorted them, saying, Save yourselves from this crooked generation.
  3. and obeyed the apostles teachings – 6:4;
    (Acts 2:42 ASV) And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and the prayers.

Repeated or new Spirit outpourings were given only to believers — who had turned from their sins.
and their wicked ways to lives of obedience to Christ – 2:42; 3:1,19,22-26; 4:8,19-35; 5:29-32; 6:4; 8:14-21; 9:1-19; 10:34-47; 19:1-6; 24:16.

Walking by and being led by the Spirit are conditions of being FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT – Gal 5:16-25; Eph 5:18 (ASV) And be not drunken with wine, wherein is excess {riot}, but be filled with the Spirit;

Any supernatural experience thought to be the Baptism in the Holy Spirit that occurs in one who continues to follow the sinful ways of the flesh is NOT of Christ
(1John 4:16) And we know and have believed the love which God hath in us. God is love; and he that abideth in love abideth in God, and God abideth in him.
it is rather a counterfeit baptism in the Spirit.
and may be accompanied by demonic gifts and powers
(Mat 7:21-23 ASV) Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father who is in heaven. {22} Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy by thy name, and by thy name cast out demons, and by thy name do many mighty works? {23} And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
(2Thes 2:7-10) For the mystery of lawlessness doth already work: only there is one that restraineth now, until he be taken out of the way. {8} And then shall be revealed the lawless one, whom the Lord Jesus shall slay with the breath of his mouth, and bring to nought by the manifestation of his coming; {9} even he, whose coming is according to the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, {10} and with all deceit of unrighteousness for them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

The genuine Baptism in the Holy Spirit will cause us to love, magnify, and glorify God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ more than ever before
(John 16:13-14 ASV) Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, these shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come. {14} He shall glorify me: for he shall take of mine, and shall declare it unto you.
(Acts 2:11 ASV) Cretans and Arabians, we hear them speaking in our tongues the mighty works of God.
(Acts 2:36 ASV) Let all the house of Israel therefore know assuredly, that God hath made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom ye crucified.
(Acts 4:12 ASV) And in none other is there salvation: for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, wherein we must be saved.
(Acts 7:55-56 ASV) But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, {56} and said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing on the right hand of God.
(Acts 10:44-46 ASV) While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all them that heard the word. {45} And they of the circumcision that believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit. {46} For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.
