NEW—4-PRAYER THAT CHANGES THINGS

PRAYER THAT CHANGES THINGS

Matthew 17:14-21 And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, (15) Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatic, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. (16) And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. (17) Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. (18) And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. (19) Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? (20) And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. (21) Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

Don't let thoughts of doubt and unbelief take root—praise God instead.

PRAYER THAT CHANGES THINGS.

A. INTERCESSION.

  • To consult our physical senses for evidence that our prayers have or have not been answered is as ridiculous as trying to see with our ears or hear with our noses.
  • Contrary evidence of the senses is no reason for doubting.
  • This is the prayer of faith—not the prayer of "look."
  • The evidences upon which our faith rests are far more reliable; in fact, they are eternal.
  • Regardless of physical evidence, circumstances, or surroundings, the Word of God is settled forever. — (Dan 10:12) Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words.
  • The intercessor must rely on the Holy Spirit. — (Eph 2:8) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: — (Heb 12:1) Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.

B. AGREEMENT=HARMONY=FORGIVENESS TOGETHER — (Mat 18:19) Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. — (Mark 11:25) And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.

  • On the Word as the base or foundation for the agreement — (Eph 6:17-18) And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: {18} Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.
  • USE THE WORD IN PRAYING.
  • The Gk word sumphoneo means "agree" (everything in harmony).
  • In your heart — (Mark 11:23) For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
  • Fix your mind — (2Cor 10:5) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. — (Php 4:6-9) Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. {7} And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. {8} Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. {9} Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.
  • Act in agreement (body). Expect, act as though it's already done — (Jas 1:22) But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
  • DO THE THINGS THE WORD SAYS DO.
  • Write it down — (Neh 9:38) And because of all this we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, Levites, and priests, seal unto it.
  • and Keep It Before You — (Pro 4:20-23) My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. {21} Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. {22} For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. {23} Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
  • Stay on the agreement—keep walking by faith.

C. PETITION AND SUPPLICATION—FOR THE SAINTS — (Isa 43:25) I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins. — (1John 5:15-16) And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him. {16} If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.

  • Take time—allow the Holy Spirit to help form the prayer — (Rom 8:26-34) Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. {27} And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. {28} And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. {29} For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. {30} Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. {31} What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? {32} He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? {33} Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. {34} Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
  • (1Cor 2:9-13) But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. {10} But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. {11} For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. {12} Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. {13} Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
  • (Heb 4:12) For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
  • (Heb 4:16) Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
  • THEN GO BOLDLY TO THE THRONE.
  • Petition—a formal written request addressed to a sovereign superior for a particular right or grace.
  • Supplication—a humble, earnest petition — (Job 40:6-10) Then answered the LORD unto Job out of the whirlwind, and said, {7} Gird up thy loins now like a man: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me. {8} Wilt thou also disannul my judgment? wilt thou condemn me, that thou mayest be righteous? {9} Hast thou an arm like God? or canst thou thunder with a voice like him? {10} Deck thyself now with majesty and excellency; and array thyself with glory and beauty.
  • (Isa 43:25-26) I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins. {26} Put me in remembrance: let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified. — (Heb 4:16) Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

D. OBTAIN MERCY-FIND GRACE.

  • Believe God’s love — (1John 4:16) And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
  • Cast ALL care — 1Peter 5:1-9  The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:  (2)  Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;  (3)  Neither as being lords over  God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.  (4)  And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.  (5)  Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.  (6)  Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:  (7)  Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.  (8)  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:  (9)  Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
  • (Rom 4:16) Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all.
  • Faith works by love — (Gal 5:6) For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love. — (2Cor 9:8) And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:
  • The Word of His grace (sufficiency) — (Acts 20:32) And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.

E. HOW DOES THE SACRIFICE OF JESUS AFFECT THIS SITUATION?

F. HOW DO HIS PROMISES AFFECT THIS SITUATION? HOW SHOULD I ACT?

  • Bold—knowing I belong.
  • Loving—knowing I've forgiven.
  • In faith—knowing I have His Word.
  • Humble, but powerful—knowing I have His Spirit.
  • Expectant—knowing He is a faithful High Priest.
  • Free from fear, sin, doubt—knowing I have His Name and His armor.
