4-Day of the Lord-Part 2

THE DAY OF THE Lord (Yahweh) Part 2
Joel 1:15‑20; 2Sam. 22:7‑16; Isa. 2:10‑21; Jer. 25:29‑33; Mat. 24 & 25

THE SECOND EVENT WILL BE THE RAPTURE. Christ is going to come in the air and take every Believer, [those who have accepted Christ as their personal Savior], both living and dead, to heaven to be with Him. When He comes, He will give every Believer a glorified, resurrection body.

THE RAPTURE - THAT BLESSED HOPE. The Rapture of the saints at the beginning of the Day of the Lord… (1Thes 4:13‑17) But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. {14} For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. {15} For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. {16} For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: {17} Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

  1. 1Thes 4:13: "Asleep" (koimomenon, Gk.) is an euphemism for death, but this does not indicate "soul sleep."
  2. Paul makes it clear elsewhere that at the moment of death one is immediately ushered into the presence of God — 2Cor. 5:8 ASV we are of good courage, I say, and are willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be at home with the Lord.
  3. Jesus' words to the thief also convey this assurance — Luke 23:39-43 ASV And one of the malefactors that were hanged railed on him, saying, Art not thou the Christ? save thyself and us. 40 But the other answered, and rebuking him said, Dost thou not even fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. 42 And he said, Jesus, remember me when thou comest in thy kingdom. 43 And he said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To-day shalt thou be with me in Paradise.

PAUL IS SUGGESTING THAT DEATH IS LIKE SLEEP FOR BELIEVERS BECAUSE —

  1. It is a temporary, or interim state,
  2. It is a restful state for the Believer, and
  3. It is a state from which one awakes. Daniel uses the same metaphor to speak of death and resurrection. Daniel 12:2 ASV And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.
    (a) 1Thes. 4:14‑17 the word "if" in this verse could be interpreted "since."
    (b) The historical certainty of the resurrection of Jesus is the basis for our confidence in a future resurrection. The Rapture ("catching up") of the true church (all believers in Jesus) is the next great event in the redemptive plan and purpose of God.
  4. Several aspects of that event are outlined in this section:
    (a) At the return of Christ for His people, those who have died in Christ will come with Jesus (v14).
    (b) Those who are still living at that time will not have the advantage over those who have died in the Lord. The living will not "precede" the dead in Christ to heaven (v15). These latter saints will rise first (v16), indicating the resurrection of the physical body and the rejoining of soul and body. They are summoned by the Lord's trumpet call.
    (c) Those still living at the time of Christ's return for the saints will be "caught up," a translation of the Gk harpazo, meaning "to seize." The Latin Vulgate rendered this by the verb rapti (Lat), hence the word "Rapture." The word implies the immediate translation of believers, including the change of their bodies to a glorified state.

CHRIST COMES IN THE AIR (CLOUDS) FOR HIS CHURCH.

  1. Believers must be prepared and wait expectantly for this imminent event — Mat 24:42,44; 25:1-13; Mark 13:33-37; Luke 12:35; 21:19,34-36; Rom 13:11; Php 4:5; 1Thes 1:10; 4:16-18; 5:6-11; 2Tim 4:8; Tit 2:13.
  2. Christ will come unexpectedly, the time cannot be calculated — Mat 24:36, Mat 24:42,44; 25:5-7,13; Mark 13:32-37; Luke 12:35-46.
  3. Christ will come to catch away believers who are alive at this time — Luke 21:36; John 14:3; 1Thes 1:10; 4:15-17; 2Thes 2:1; Rev 3:10-11.
  4. Believers will be delivered from the coming wrath — Luke 21:36; 1Thes 1:10; 1Thes 5:2-9; Rev 3:10-11.
  5. Believers who are alive at this time will receive transformed bodies — Rom 8:23; 1Cor 15:51-54; 1Thes 4:16-17.
  6. Believers who died before this event will rise and be caught up with Christ — 1Cor 15:50-55; 1Thes 4:16-17.
  7. All the Raptured saints will be judged by Christ — John 5:22; Rom 14:12; 1Cor 3:12-15; 2Cor 5:10; 2Tim 4:8.
  8. Believers will be judged according to their deeds and will receive rewards at this time — Eccl 12:14; Mat 5:11-12,22; 12:36-37; 25:14-23; Mark 4:22; Luke 19:12-19; 22:28-30; Rom 2:5-11,16; 1Cor 3:12-14; 4:5; 9:25-27; 13:3; 2Cor 5:10; Gal 6:8-10; Eph 6:8; Col 3:23-25; 2Tim 4:8; Heb 6:10; 1Pet 5:4; Rev 2:7,11,17,26-28; 3:4-5,12,21.
  9. Less faithful believers will not be condemned, but will receive little or no reward — Eccl 12:14; Mat 5:19; 1Cor 2:13-15; 2Cor 5:10; Col 3:25; 1John 2:28.
