JESUS: OUR FAITHFUL HIGH PRIEST
Hebrews 2:17-18; 3:1-6; 9:15-17
Heb 2:17-18 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.  (18) For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.
Heb 3:1-6 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;  (2) Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.  (3) For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.  (4) For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.  (5) And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;  (6) But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.
Heb 9:15-17 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.  (16) For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.  (17) For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.

ALL THAT JESUS DID IN HIS EARTHLY MINISTRY
WOULD BE TO NO AVAIL IF NOT FOR WHAT HE IS DOING TODAY.

A. Jesus went through Calvary to empower His present day ministry ––
(Heb 12:1-3) Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, {2} looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. {3} For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.

B. JESUS IS OUR FAITHFUL HIGH PRIEST.

1. He is our High Priest ––
(Heb 3:1) Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus.
(Heb 4:14) Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

2. He is our Mediator of the better covenant ––
(1Tim 2:5) For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,
(Heb 7:6) but he whose genealogy is not derived from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises.
(Rom 10:9) that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

3. He is our Intercessor ––
(Heb 7:25) Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

4. He is our Advocate ––
(1John 1:8) If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
(1John 2:2) And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.

5. He is our Lord––Head of the Church ––
(Php 2:9-11) Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, {10} that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, {11} and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

C. JESUS IS HIGH PRIEST OVER HIS WILL––THE NEW TESTAMENT ––
(Heb 7:22) by so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant.
(Heb 9:15-17) And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. {16}For where there is a testament,  there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. {17} For a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives.

1. The Promise is sure ––
(Mat 13:15) For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.
(Rom 4:16) Therefore it is of faith that it might be according to grace, so that the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all.

2. Apostle of our confession ––
(Heb 3:1) Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus.

SATAN COMES IMMEDIATELY TO STEAL THE WORD ––
(Mark 4:14) "The sower soweth the word.
(John 10:10) "The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

A. His agents are the rulers of darkness ––
(2Cor 4:3-6) But even if our  gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, {4} whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. {5}For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bond-servants for Jesus' sake. {6} For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
(Eph 4:17-18) This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, {18} having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart;
(Eph 6:12) For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

1. Consider not ––
(Rom 4:20 NKJV) He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God.
(1Cor 10:13) No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

B. FIVE WEAPONS OF DARKNESS TO STEAL THE WORD.

1. Persecution
––
(Mark 10:29) So Jesus answered and said, "Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel's.
(2Tim 3:11-12) persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured. And out of them all the Lord delivered me. {12}Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.

2. Affliction ––
(2Cor 4:3-6) But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, {4}whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. {5} For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus' sake. {6} For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
(2Tim 3:11) persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured. And out of them all the Lord delivered me.

3. Cares of this world ––
(Luke 21:34) "But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly.
(Php 4:6) Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

4. Deceitfulness of riches ––
(1Tim 6:5-10) useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself. {6} Now godliness with contentment is great gain. {7} For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. {8} And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. {9} But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. {10} For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
(1Tim 6:17-19) Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. {18}Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, {19} storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

5. Lust of other things ––
(Rom 14:23) But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin.
(James 1:13-15) Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. {14} But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. {15} Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

C. THE WEAPONS OF OUR WARFARE ––
(2Cor 10:3-6) For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. {4} For the weapons of our war-fare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, {5} casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience  of Christ, {6} and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.

1. The scriptures ––
(2Tim 3:11-17) persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured. And out of them all the Lord delivered me. {12} Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. {13} But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. {14} But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, {15} and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. {16} All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, {17} that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2. The full armor ––
Eph 6:10-18 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.  (11) Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.  (12) For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.  (13) Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.  (14) Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;  (15) And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;  (16) Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.  (17) And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:  (18) Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

3. The shield of faith (quench all fiery darts) ––
(Eph 6:16) above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

4. The light of God (2Cor 4:3-13)
2Cor 4:3-13 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:  (4) In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.  (5) For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake.  (6) For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.  (7) But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.  (8) We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;  (9) Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;  (10) Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.  (11) For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh.  (12) So then death worketh in us, but life in you.  (13) We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak.

5. The light is in the gospel.

6. His Word is light to our pathway.

D. IF WE KEEP OUR TONGUES BRIDLED, WE WILL NOT BE DECEIVED ––
(Jas 3:6) And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of  nature; and it is set on fire by hell.
(Jas 1:26) If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one's religion is useless.

1. We must bridle our tongues through love.

2. Jesus commands us to walk in love

(Eph 5:2) And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.
