5-WHAT IS REGENERATION?

WHAT IS REGENERATION?
John 3:1-8 [v3]; Titus 3:5
John 3:1-8 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: (2) The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. (3) Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. (4) Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? (5) Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. (6) That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. (7) Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. (8) The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.

REGENERATION-Gk PALINGENESIA=new birth, regeneration.

THE NECESSITY OF THE NEW BIRTH: GROWS
OUT OF THE INABILITY OF THE NATURAL MAN —

  1. To see, to perceive, the Kingdom of God — Psa 51:5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.
  2. To enter the Kingdom of God — Mark 7:21-23 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, (22) Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: (23) All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
  3. No matter how gifted, moral or refined he may be
    1. the natural man is absolutely blind to spiritual truth — 1Cor 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
    2. he is impotent to enter the kingdom of God — Rom 8:7-8 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. (8) So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
    3. for he can neither —
      1. obey — Rom 8:7-8; Eph 2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
      2. understand — 1Cor 2:14; Jer 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
      3. nor please God — Mk 7:21-23; John 3:5-6 (above)

THE NEW BIRTH IS NOT A REFORMATION OF THE OLD NATURE —
Rom 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

  1. It is a creative act of the Holy Spirit — John 3:5; John 1:12-13 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: (13) Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.…2Cor 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

THE CONDITION FOR RECEIVING THE NEW BIRTH IS FAITH IN CHRIST CRUCIFIED AND RESURRECTED — John 1:12-13 above; John 3:14-15 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: (15) That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
Gal 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

THROUGH THE NEW BIRTH THE BELIEVER BECOMES A MEMBER OF THE FAMILY OF GOD —
Galatians 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
1Pet 1:22-25 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: (23) Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. (24) For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: (25) But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

  1. The believer becomes a partaker of the Divine nature — Gal 2:10 Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.…Eph 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.…Eph 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
  2. The believer becomes a partaker of the life of Christ Himself — 1Pet 1:23-25; Col 1:27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:…1John 5:10-12 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. (11) And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. (12) He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

IN VIEW OF Ezekiel 36:24-26 —
Nicodemus should have known about
the New Birth — Regeneration — Re-creation.
Ezekiel 36:24-26 For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land. (25) Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. (26) A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

  1. Nicodemus coming to Jesus is significant because it marks his spiritual beginning —
    1. firstly, he came by night — John 3:2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
    2. secondly, he was numbered with the disciples — John 7:50-51 Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them,) (51) Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?
    3. thirdly, he took a stand at Jesus death - he came to give Jesus a proper burial — John 19:39 And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.
  2. Born Again, i.e., born from above emphasizes the origin of our Salvation — Gal 4:9 But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?
  3. Notice the relationship between —
    1. the CLEAN WATER, NEW SPIRIT, NEW HEART of Ezk 36:24-26 For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land.
    2. the WATER, SPIRIT and NEW BIRTH, BORN AGAIN of John 3:3-7 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
