12-WHAT ARE MIRACLES

WHAT ARE MIRACLES?
John 6:2; Mark 16:17‑18
John 6:2 And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his miracles which he did on them that were diseased.
Mark 16:17-18 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; (18) They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

WHAT ARE MIRACLES?

1. Miracles are works of a supernatural origin and power — Gk DUNAMIS

  • Acts 8:13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.
  • Acts 19:11-12 And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul: (12) So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.

2. They function as a sign or mark — Gk SEMEION — of Divine authority —

  • Acts 4:16 Saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it.
  • Acts 4:30 By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.
  • Acts 4:33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.

3. The central and greatest miracle of the NT faith is the resurrection of Christ — 1Cor 15:1-58

MIRACLES SERVE AT LEAST THREE PURPOSES IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD.

  1. Miracles witness to the Divinity of Jesus Christ.
  2. Authenticating the truth of His message.
  3. Proving His identity as the Christ of God — John 5:1‑21; John 2:23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.…John 10:25 Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me.…John 11:42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
  4. Matthew 8:2 And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
  5. Luke 7:12-15 Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. (13) And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. (14) And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. (15) And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.
  6. Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
  7. Matthew 11:2-5 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, (3) And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another? (4) Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: (5) The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
Miracles express Christ's compassionate love —
Miracles signify the age of salvation —
The coming of the kingdom of God.
God's invasion into the realm of Satan.

SCRIPTURES MAINTAIN THAT MIRACLES ARE TO OPERATE THROUGH OUT THE ENTIRE CHURCH AGE:

1. Jesus sent out His followers to preach and perform miracles —

  • Matthew 10:7-8 And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand. (8) Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.
  • Mark 3:14-15 And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach, (15) And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:
  • Luke 9:2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.

2. Jesus declared that those who believed in Him through the preaching of the Gospel were to do the works that He did and would even do greater works —

  • John 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
  • Mark 16:15-20 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. (16)  He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. (17) And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; (18) They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. (19) So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. (20) And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

3. Acts speaks of Miracles in the lives of Believers — Acts 3:1; 5:12; 9:32; 15:12; 20:7-11;

  • Acts 6:8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.

4. Elsewhere in the NT these are called signs by which the proclamation of the Gospel was confirmed — Acts 4:29‑30; 14:3;

  • Hebrews 2:2-4 For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; (3) How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; (4) God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?
  • 2Cor 12:12 Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.
  • Romans 15:18-19 For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me, to make the Gentiles obedient, by word and deed, (19) Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ.

5. The Spirit wants to give this present age the same signs and miracles that marked the Early Church —

  • 1Cor 12:8-12 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; (9) To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; (10) To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: (11) But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. (12) For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
  • James 5:14-15 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: (15) And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

6. When we embrace the Holy Spirit only then we will be operating in the realm of the miraculous.

THE NT TEACHES THAT SIGNS AND WONDERS WILL BE PERFORMED, ESPECIALLY DURING THE TRIBULATION

1. By the power of Satan.
2. Through false teachers and preachers.
3. Especially by the antichrist and his false prophet.
