5-Anointed to Serve

ANOINTED TO SERVE!
Luke 4:14-20 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about. (15) And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. (16) And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up for to read. (17) And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, (18) The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, (19) To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. (20) And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

v14 ‑ THIS IS VITAL FOR EVERY MINISTER OF THE GOSPEL.

  1. Jesus was enveloped by the Holy Spirit.
  2. To Walk in the Power of the Holy Spirit.

v16 ‑ AS HIS CUSTOM WAS.

  1. This refers to His position in His home synagogue.
  2. It was customary every Sabbath for 7 persons to read:
    1. a priest.
    2. a Levite, and
    3. five ordinary Israelites.
  3. It was the custom that all readers of Scripture stand while reading and praying.
  4. This was a mark of respect for God and His Word — 1Kings 8:14,22,55; Neh 9:2‑4; Luke 4:16; 18:11; Mark 11:25; Neh. 8:1-7 And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water gate; and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded to Israel. (2) And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month. (3) And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law. (4) And Ezra the scribe stood upon a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchiah, and Hashum, and Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam. (5) And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up: (6) And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the LORD with their faces to the ground. (7) Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people stood in their place.

v18 ‑ THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME.

  1. The Spirit upon one indicates His moving one to do some supernatural work — Num 11:17‑29; 24:2; Jdgs 3:10; 6:34; 11:29; 14:6,19; 15:14; 1Sam 10:6, 11:6, 19:20‑23, 2Chr 15:1; 2Chr. 24:20 And the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, which stood above the people, and said unto them, Thus saith God, Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD, that ye cannot prosper? because ye have forsaken the LORD, he hath also forsaken you.
  2. Not an example is given of the Spirit coming upon one who then remained powerless to do what he was called to do.

v18 ‑ HE HATH ANOINTED ME TO PREACH —

  1. The Gospel (Good News) to the poor, destitute, needy, those powerless to help themselves.
  2. and Bring Deliverance to captives in sin, sickness and death ‑‑ Acts 10:38, Eph 4:8‑10, Heb. 2:14-15 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;  (15) And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
  3. The acceptable year or period typified by the year of Jubilee when liberty was proclaimed to all people on the Day of Atonement — Leviticus 25:8-13 And thou shalt number seven sabbaths of years unto thee, seven times seven years; and the space of the seven sabbaths of years shall be unto thee forty and nine years.  (9) Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of the jubilee to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land.  (10) And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubilee unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.  (11) A jubilee shall that fiftieth year be unto you: ye shall not sow, neither reap that which groweth of itself in it, nor gather the grapes in it of thy vine undressed.  (12) For it is the jubilee; it shall be holy unto you: ye shall eat the increase thereof out of the field.  (13) In the year of this jubilee ye shall return every man unto his possession.

Anointed to HEAL‑‑

  • the broken in heart, mind, soul, and body — Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
  • Acts 10:38 AMP How God anointed and consecrated Jesus of Nazareth with the [Holy] Spirit and with strength and ability and power; how He went about doing good and, in particular, curing all who were harassed and oppressed by [the power of] the devil, for God was with Him.
  • the blind in body, soul, and spirit ‑ those in darkness — Mat 4:16, Luke 1:79, 2:32, John 1:4‑9, 3:16‑21, 8:32, Acts 26:18, Col. 1:13-14 AMP [The Father] has delivered and drawn us to Himself out of the control and the dominion of darkness and has transferred us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 In Whom we have our redemption through His blood, [which means] the forgiveness of our sins.
  • the bruised, completely crushed and shattered in life, oppressed and broken — Mark 5:1‑20, Luke  3:16. Isaiah 58:6-14 AMP [Rather] is not this the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every [enslaving] yoke? [Acts 8:23.] 7 Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house--when you see the naked, that you cover him, and that you hide not yourself from [the needs of] your own flesh and blood? 8 Then shall your light break forth like the morning, and your healing (your restoration and the power of a new life) shall spring forth speedily; your righteousness (your rightness, your justice, and your right relationship with God) shall go before you [conducting you to peace and prosperity], and the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. [Ex. 14:19-20; Isa. 52:12.] 9 Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry, and He will say, Here I am. If you take away from your midst yokes of oppression [wherever you find them], the finger pointed in scorn [toward the oppressed or the godly], and every form of false, harsh, unjust, and wicked speaking, [Ex. 3:14.] 10 And if you pour out that with which you sustain your own life for the hungry and satisfy the need of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in darkness, and your obscurity and gloom become like the noonday. 11 And the Lord shall guide you continually and satisfy you in drought and in dry places and make strong your bones. And you shall be like a watered garden and like a spring of water whose waters fail not. 12 And your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of [buildings that have laid waste for] many generations; and you shall be called Repairer of the Breach, Restorer of Streets to Dwell In. 13 If you turn away your foot from [traveling unduly on] the Sabbath, from doing your own pleasure on My holy day, and call the Sabbath a [spiritual] delight, the holy day of the Lord honorable, and honor Him and it, not going your own way or seeking or finding your own pleasure or speaking with your own [idle] words, 14 Then will you delight yourself in the Lord, and I will make you to ride on the high places of the earth, and I will feed you with the heritage [promised for you] of Jacob your father; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken it. [Gen. 27:28-29; 28:13-15.]

ANOINTED TO BRING DELIVERANCE TO THE TOTAL PERSON! —
1Thes 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.…1Thes 5:23 AMP 23 And may the God of peace Himself sanctify you through and through [separate you from profane things, make you pure and wholly consecrated to God]; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved sound and complete [and found] blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah).

WHEN CHRIST’S ATONEMENT IS FULLY EMBRACED ‑‑

  1. the sick, sinful, helpless, and needy are restored health, holiness, power and prosperity.
  2. FULL DOMINION OVER SATAN IS RESTORED — Luke 10:19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
  3. membership and communion in God's family is enjoined — Rom 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
