20—ACTS 8:14-23

Acts 8:14-23
Acts 8:14-23  Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:  (15)  Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:  (16)  (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)  (17)  Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.  (18)  And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,  (19)  Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.  (20)  But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.  (21)  Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.  (22)  Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.  (23)  For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.

  • Prayer for the Baptism in the Holy Ghost is part of the Gospel program – v15; 1:14; 9:17-18; 19:1-7; 1Cor 12:30; 14:1; (Luke 11:13) If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
  • The Holy Spirit being given here does not refer to receiving the Spirit of adoption, for all receive this when born again (Rom 8:9 ASV) But ye are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you. But if any man hath not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. (14) For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. {15} For ye received not the spirit of bondage again unto fear; but ye received the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. {16} The Spirit himself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are children of God:
  • The Holy Spirit here refers to the Holy Spirit Baptism.
  • to the supernatural gifts of the Spirit for service.
  • but not to salvation–these people were saved from sin.
  • justified and born again.
  • healed, baptized in water.
  • and had great joy in Christ – 8:6-13.
  • This experience was subsequent to the experiences in 8:6-13.
  • It was for all believers – 8:14-17.
  • It was what the church at Jerusalem had received so they wanted other churches to receive also (Acts 2:33 ASV) Being therefore by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he hath poured forth this, which ye see and hear. (38) And Peter said unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. {39}For to you is the promise, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call unto him.
  • Mat 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
  • John 7:37-39 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. [38] He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. [39] (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
  • Being converted, healed, baptized in water, and having great joy does not bring the Holy Spirit as the Church at Jerusalem had the Spirit.
  • the Samaritans had all this and yet lacked the Holy Spirit power – 8:6-13.
  • The Holy Spirit in this measure can be imparted by prayer and laying on of hands – 8:15-23.
  • This does not mean that this is the only way to receive
  • no hands were laid on men at Pentecost – 2:1-21.
  • or at the house of Cornelius – (Acts 10:44-48 ASV) While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all them that heard the word. {45} And they of the circumcision that believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit. {46} For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, {47} Can any man forbid the water, that these should not be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit as well as we? {48} And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.
  • Others besides the twelve apostles can lay hands on other believers to receive the Spirit in this manner (Acts 9:17-18 ASV) And Ananias departed, and entered into the house; and laying his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, who appeared unto thee in the way which thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mayest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Spirit. {18} And straightway there fell from his eyes as it were scales, and he received his sight; and he arose and was baptized.
  • (Acts 19:1-7 ASV) And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper country came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples: {2} and he said unto them, Did ye receive the Holy Spirit when ye believed? And they said unto him, Nay, we did not so much as hear whether the Holy Spirit was given. {3} And he said, Into what then were ye baptized? And they said, Into John's baptism. {4} And Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him that should come after him, that is, on Jesus. {5} And when they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. {6} And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. {7} And they were in all about twelve men.
  • (1Tim 4:14 ASV) Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
  • (2Tim 1:6 ASV) For which cause I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee through the laying on of my hands.
  • It is Biblical to hold special services for this extra reception of the Holy Spirit – 8:15-17; 9:17-18; 19:1-7; 1Tim 4:14; (2Tim. 1:6 AMP) That is why I would remind you to stir up (rekindle the embers of, fan the flame of, and keep burning) the [gracious] gift of God, [the inner fire] that is in you by means of the laying on of my hands [with those of the elders at your ordination].
  • (Heb 6:2 ASV) of the teaching of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
  • This experience was something that produced evidences that could be seen and heard by men or else no money would have been offered for such power – 8:18-23.
  • Spiritual things are not for the purpose of making money – 8:18-23.
  • The Spirit power cannot be bought with money – 8:18-23.
  • One must be right at heart to partake of this program – 8:21.
  • It was "the Gift of God" – 8:20 – which is also called the Spirit Baptism in Acts 2:38-39; 11:14-18; 15:7-13; Acts 19:1-7 above; (Acts 1:4-5 ASV) and, being assembled together with them, he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, said he, ye heard from me: 5 For John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days hence.
