17—ACTS 6:3-8

FULL OF THE SPIRIT AND WISDOM
Acts 6:3-8
Acts 6:3-8 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.  (4) But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.  (5) And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:  (6) Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.  (7) And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.  (8) And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.

THE APOSTLES STIPULATED THAT THE SEVEN MEN HAD TO GIVE EVIDENCE OF HAVING CONTINUED FAITHFULLY UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.
1.  Apparently the apostles assumed that not all believers continued to be full of the Holy Spirit.
2.  Those who fail to live faithfully by the Spirit will cease to be full of the Spirit —
(Gal 5:16-25 ASV) But I say, walk by the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. {17} For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are contrary the one to the other; that ye may not do the things that ye would. {18} But if ye are led by the Spirit, ye are not under the law. {19} Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these: fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, {20} idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousies, wraths, factions, divisions, parties, {21} envyings, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; of which I forewarn you, even as I did forewarn you, that they who practice such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. {22} But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, {23} meekness, self-control; against such there is no law. {24} And they that are of Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with the passions and the lusts thereof. {25} If we live by the Spirit, by the Spirit let us also walk.

THE PHRASE "FULL OF THE SPIRIT" EXPRESSES

  • (Acts 6:5 ASV) And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit.
  • (11:24) for he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord.
  1. A continuing character, quality, condition within believers that result from experiencing the Spirit's fullness.
  2. This enables believers to minister in the power of the Holy Spirit.
  3. To speak under prophetic inspiration as the Spirit gives utterance –
  4. Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

THE TERM "FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT" IS USED IN THREE WAYS

1. To indicate the reception of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit —

  • (Acts 1:5 ASV) For John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days hence.
  • (Acts 2:4 ASV) And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
  • (Acts 9:17 ASV) And Ananias departed, and entered into the house; and laying his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, who appeared unto thee in the way which thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mayest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Spirit.
  • (Acts 11:16 ASV) And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit.

2. To indicate the empowering of a believer or believers on a specific occasion to speak under the impulse or prompting of the Holy Spirit —

  • (Acts 4:8 ASV) Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders,
  • (Acts 13:9 ASV) But Saul, who is also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fastened his eyes on him…
  • (Luke 1:44-45 ASV) For behold, when the voice of thy salutation came into mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. {45} And blessed is she that believed; for there shall be a fulfillment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord. {67} And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,{68}Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; For he hath visited and wrought redemption for his people.

3. To indicate a general prophetic ministry under the inspiration or anointing of the Holy Spirit without specifying the duration of that ministry —

  • (Acts 4:31-33 ASV) And when they had prayed, the place was shaken wherein they were gathered together; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spake the word of God with boldness. {32} And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and soul: and not one of them said that aught of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. {33} And with great power gave the apostles their witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.
  • (Acts 13:52 ASV) And the disciples were filled with joy with the Holy Spirit.
  • (Luke 1:15 ASV) For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb.

AFTER THE INITIAL RECEPTION OF THE BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT ––
1.  Individuals must faithfully walk in the Spirit, putting to death the misdeeds of the body

  • (Rom 8:13-14 ASV) for if ye live after the flesh, ye must die; but if by the Spirit ye put to death the deeds of the body, ye shall live. {14} For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

2.  Individuals may be described as “full of the Holy Spirit,” i.e., maintaining the abiding fullness of the Holy Spirit, (e.g.), the seven men chosen.

  1. especially Stephen – v3,5
  2. (Acts 7:55 ASV) But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,
  3. or Barnabas
  4. (Acts 11:24 ASV) for he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord.

3.  Those who maintain the fullness of the Spirit –

  1. may receive a fresh filling with the Spirit —
  2. (Acts 4:31 ASV) And when they had prayed, the place was shaken wherein they were gathered together; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spake the word of God with boldness.
  3. for a particular purpose or task —
  4. (Acts 1:8 ASV) But ye shall receive power, when the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
  5. especially a divine enabling to speak under the impulse of the Holy Spirit —
  6. (Luke 4:18 ASV) The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, Because he anointed me to preach good tidings to the poor: He hath sent me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovering of sight to the blind, To set at liberty them that are bruised.

v3-5––GAVE THEMSELVES ... TO PRAYER.
1.  The Baptism in the Holy Spirit alone is not sufficient to be an effective worker for God's cause.
2.  Preachers must constantly devote themselves to prayer and to the preaching of the Word.
3.  Gk PROSKARTEREO = gives oneself = this speaks of
      a. a steadfast and single-minded love.
      b. and a giving of much time to a certain course of action.
4.  For that reason, the apostles felt that prayer and the ministry of the Word were the most proper and highest work of Christian leaders.
5.  Prayer is mentioned often in Acts – 1:14,24; 2:42; 4:24-31; 6:4,6; 10:2,4,9,31; 11:5; 12:5; 13:3; 14:23; 16:25; 22:17; 28:8.

v6 - LAID THEIR HANDS ON THEM. In the NT the laying on of hands was used in FIVE WAYS–
1. In connection with MIRACLES OF HEALING —

  • (Acts 28:8 ASV) And it was so, that the father of Publius lay sick of fever and dysentery: unto whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laying his hands on him healed him.
  • (Mat 9:18 ASV) While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.
  • (Mark 5:23 ASV) and beseecheth him much, saying, My little daughter is at the point of death: I pray thee, that thou come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be made whole, and live.
  • (Mark 6:5 ASV) And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them.

2. In BLESSING OTHERS —

  • (Mat 19:13 ASV) Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should lay his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them. (15) And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence.

3. In connection with the BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT —

  • (Acts 8:17 ASV) Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. (19) saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay my hands, he may receive the Holy Spirit.
  • (Acts 19:6 ASV) And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

4. In commissioning for a SPECIFIC WORK – v6;

  • Acts 13:3 And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

5. In IMPARTING SPIRITUAL GIFTS by the elders –

  • 1Tim 4:14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
  • a. as a means by which God mediates gifts and blessings to others.
  • b. PRAYER AND LAYING ON OF HANDS became a foundational doctrine of the New Testament church.

v7 - THE WORD OF GOD INCREASED!…Their minds and hearts were opened to understand the Word —

  • (Luke 24:45 ASV) Then opened he their mind, that they might understand the scriptures.

v8 - STEPHEN ... FAITH and POWER.
1. The Holy Spirit empowered Stephen

  • [1:8] to perform "great wonders and miracles among the people."

2. And gave him great wisdom to preach the Gospel.
3. In such a way that his opponents could not refute his arguments – v10, cp;

  • (Ex 4:15 ASV) And thou shalt speak unto him, and put the words in his mouth: and I will be with thy mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what ye shall do.
  • (Luke 21:15 ASV) for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to withstand or to gainsay.
