14—ACTS 4:7-12

BY WHAT NAME HAVE YE DONE THIS?
Acts 4:7-12 And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this? (8) Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people, and elders of Israel, (9) If we this day be examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole; (10) Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. (11) This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. (12) Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

v8 – PETER – FILLED WITH THE HOLY GHOST.
1. Peter received a fresh filling with the Holy Spirit.
2. This brought a sudden inspiration, wisdom, and boldness by which to proclaim the Gospel — Truth of God.
3. It is theologically significant that the filling with the Spirit was not a one-time experience; but a repetitive one

(Eph 5:18) And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
4. This is a fulfillment of Jesus’ promise
(Luke 12:11-12 ASV) And when they bring you before the synagogues, and the rulers, and the authorities, be not anxious how or what ye shall answer, or what ye shall say: {12}for the Holy Spirit shall teach you in that very hour what ye ought to say.
5. Other instances of renewed fillings can be found in
Acts 7:55 (ASV) But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up steadfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God.
(Acts 13:9 ASV) But Saul, who is also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fastened his eyes on him.
6. In his answers Peter actually put his hearers on trial.
7. Peter called attention to the following facts
a. the miracle was a good deed - not a crime -- v9.
b. that it was performed by the power of Jesus Name, the Man they had crucified -- v10.
c. also Jesus rejection was prophesied in the OT – v11;
(Psa 118:22 ASV) The stone which the builders rejected Is become the head of the corner.
d. and salvation is only through Christ -- v12.

v12 - SALVATION IN ... NONE OTHER NAME.
1. The name of Jesus Christ is the center of contention -- v7,10,12 -- and ever will be.
2. Salvation for Jew and Gentile alike is exclusively in the name of Jesus
cp (John 14:6 ASV) Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no one cometh unto the Father, but by me.
3. The disciples were convinced that the greatest need of every individual
a. was salvation from sin and the wrath of God –
b. sin and the wrath of God are inseparable.
c. just as peace with God and redemption are inseparable –
(Rom 5:1-2) Being therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ; {2} through whom also we have had our access by faith into this grace wherein we stand; and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
4. The apostles preached that this need could be met by no other person than Jesus Christ.
5. This truth reveals the exclusive nature of the Gospel.
6. This truth places upon the church the heavy responsibility of preaching the Gospel to every person.
7. If there were other ways of salvation the church could be at ease;
But according to Jesus Christ Himself there is no other way to salvation
John 14:6 Jesus replied, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
8. There is no hope for anyone apart from salvation through Christ and faith in the name of Christ
(Acts 10:43 ASV) To him bear all the prophets witness, that through his name every one that believeth on him shall receive remission of sins.
(1Tim 2:5-6) For there is one God, one mediator also between God and men, himself man, Christ Jesus, {6} who gave himself a ransom for all; the testimony to be borne in its own times.
9. Our blessings, healings and answers to our prayers come through the Holy name of Jesus Christ
(John 14:12-14 ASV) Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto the Father. {13} And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. {14} If ye shall ask anything in my name, that will I do.
(John 15:16 ASV) Ye did not choose me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that ye should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should abide: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
(John 16:23 ASV) And in that day ye shall ask me no question. Verily, verily, I say unto you, if ye shall ask anything of the Father, he will give it you in my name.
